Leicestershire Landmarks:
Windmill near Morcott

Windmill near Morcott

by Geoffrey R. Herickx

This tower mill is a familiar sight to all those who have travelled along the A47 between Uppingham and Peterborough in England. Situated on a hill top, close to the picturesque village of Morcott where it is exposed to the maximum force of the wind, it stands as a lasting reminder of the days when the power of water and wind were of prime importance to agriculture and industry.  The top section of the type of mill was designed to rotate so that the force of the wind from any direction could be utilised.

The mill was derelict until 1968 when it was finally restored.  In 1970, European Conservation Year, it was given the "Countryside Award" by HRH Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the scheme.  Although it is not used as a working mill today, it is preserved as a legacy of the past and a picturesque landmark for years to come.
