Jon Irabagon, winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, has performed extensively as both a sideman and as a leader in an ever-expanding range of projects, from the most straight ahead to the most searching. Jon has studied under such divergent artists as Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, Dick Oatts, Jason Moran and Victor GoinesV, and has performed and/or recorded with musical luminaries such as Billy Joel, Wynton Marsalis, Bright Eyes, Tom Harrell, Tommy Iago, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Deborah Gibson, John Abercrombie, Frank Wess, Wycliffe Gordon, Renee Fleming, Kenny Washington, Lou Reed, Jenny Lewis, Ron Sexsmith, and Ken Vandermark. Jon has performed and done clinics and workshops in the United States, Canada, Europe, Macau, Taiwan, Costa Rica, and Japan, and performs regularly in New York Citys top venues Jons conception of complete musical inclusion in his improvisation and composition is apparent in the wide-ranaging body of work he has compiled in his young career: his quintet Outright! (Innova) that embraces the complete history of jazz while wrapping it up in group improvisation, his continuous additive duo project with drummer Mike Pride "I Dont Hear Nothin But the Blues" (Loyal Label), his unapologetic 80s cover band, his Sonny Rollins Tribute Trio, the straight-ahead modern jazz group Confluence (For the Artist Records) that he co-leads with fellow Manhattan School of Music graduates, the freely-improvising RIDD Quartet (Clean Feed), as well as his long-time tenure in the selfdestructing bebop cyborg terrorist band Mostly Other People do the Killing (Hot Cup). Jon has been signed to Concord Records and has a CD of original music and jazz standards coming out in the fall of 2009. Please visit www.jonirabagon.com for music. Malcolm Edmonstone is a jazz pianist and arranger, born in Perth, Scotland in 1980. In 1998 he moved to London to study with Simon Purcell and Pete Churchill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he is now professor and a key member of the jazz faculty. The ten years between then and now saw Malcolm gather an enormous range of experience, both as a practitioner and educator. He has worked in many high profile situations, often as musical director/associate. At the age of 20, Malcolm was called on by television MD Laurie Holloway to step in to cover the piano chair on a tour with his wife, the late jazz legend Marion Montgomery. Since then Malcolm has continued to work with Laurie on various projects, including the first three series of the BBC1 show Strictly Come Dancing, where he played piano and arranged a significant portion of the music. During this time Malcolm was writing prolifically and having his arrangements performed live on television to audiences upwards of 10m. At 21, he met Jacqui Dankworth and soon became her Musical Director, a position he holds to this day. Together they have toured the world and been involved in numerous recording projects, including the album Detour Ahead. Recently they have recorded an album with Jacqui’s father, Sir John Dankworth. As a jazz sideman Malcolm has enjoyed greatly the breadth of experience that London can offer a young jazz musician, having worked with Dame Cleo Laine & Sir John Dankworth, Georgie Fame, Mark Lockheart, Alan Barnes, Art Themen, Duncan Lamont, Steve Waterman, Dave O’Higgins, Tina May, Dick Pearce, Stan Sulzmann, Martin Speake, Pete Hurt, Martin Hathaway, Frank Holder, Russell Van Den Berg, Simon Allen and Laurence Cottle. Later in 2009 he will be touring with legendary guitarist Mike Walker. In addition to work in the jazz world, Malcolm is often called upon as a reliable MD for artists operating in many and various musics. He is MD for Lenny Beige, the comic alter-ego of Steve Furst (Little Britain, Orange ads) and they often appear at London’s Pigalle Club. As a session/TV musician he has performed with Tony Bennett, Michael Bolton, Cliff Richard, Robin Gibb, Donnie Osmond, Bruce Forsyth, Madeline Bell, Vernon Kaye, Denise Van Outen, Tony Christie and Kenny Lynch. He has recorded widely as a session musician and appeared on all the major UK television networks. In addition to working at the Guildhall School, Malcolm also finds time to teach at Trinity College of Music (arranging) and Middlesex University (composition) and co-directs the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, most recently conducting for Mark Lockheart. Percy Pursglove After graduating from the Birmingham Conservatoire’s BMus(Hons) Jazz course with first class honours, Percy obtained a scholarship to study on the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at the New School University, New York City. During his stay in New York he performed with numerous ensembles including The Ellington Orchestra at Birdland, the Coltrane ensemble at Sweet Rhythm and the Rene Marie big band at Town Hall to name but a few. Having returned from New York Percy is now working as a freelance Jazz musician/recording artist and a lecturer at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Percy works in many professional fields as a Trumpet and Double Bass player. Some of the most recent ensembles he has performed with include the BBC Radio Big Band/Amy Winehouse, Paul Dunmall, Hans Koller, the London Jazz Orchestra, the Rosie Kay Contemporary Dance Company and his own quartet featuring Dan Weiss and Thomas Morgan. Mark Anderson Mark Anderson was born in Omaha, NE, on October 9, 1974. In 1993, Mark moved to New Orleans, LA, to study music at Loyola University. While attending Loyola, Mark had the opportunity to perform with Jazz legends Benny Golson and Stanley Turrentine, as well as the opportunity to study with such New Orleans icons as drummer, Johnny Vidacovich, and trumpeter Charlie Miller. During his stay in New Orleans, Mark became immersed in the fertile music scene of the Crescent City, performing and recording with some of the finest musicians in the industry. His musical career has taken him around the world to such places as Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and most recently Scotland. In August 2001, Mark moved to New York City to enroll in the graduate program at the Manhattan School of Music. He completed his Master’s degree in 2003. Mark has recorded with Blue Note recording artists Steve Masakowski, and Brian Blade, and Verve recording artists Nicholas Payton, and Stanton Moore. He has performed with Peter Martin, Badal Roi, Danny Gottlieb, Steve Masakowski, Nicholas Payton, Ingrid Jensen, Mark Turner, Marcus Strickland, Jon Ellis, Ted Rosenthal, John Riley, Shannon Powell, Jon Cowherd, Mark Murphy, Jason and Delfeo Marsalis, Adonis Rose, Johnny Vidacovich, Dan Aykroid and John Goodman (Blues Brothers ’00), and Blues legend Earl King. |
