Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Andrew Bain graduated from London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2001, in which year he was awarded BBC Big Band Drummer of the Year.
He subsequently moved to New York to study at Manhattan School of Music, earning his Masters degree in 2003. During this time Andrew had the privilege of performing with luminaries of the jazz world Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Billy Cobham and was assistant to Peter Erskine when performing with the BBC in London. He has performed extensively throughout Europe and North America, including appearances at the BBC Proms, the Montreux Jazz Festival and many of New York's legendary clubs. Whilst resident in NY, he taught at MSM Preparatory Division and, during visits home, also taught at the City of Edinburgh Music School, where he is currently instructor of jazz. Andrew co-leads the NY-based group Confluence whose eponymous debut showcased original and highly inventive compositions. Currently he maintains a busy schedule performing and teaching in the UK and New York, and in 2007 was appointed instructor of jazz drumset at Birmingham Conservatoire. He recently toured the UK with Thelonious Monk Competition Winner Jon Irabagon and started teaching at the Guildhall School of Music. Andrew co-directs the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. |
