I give you greetings.
My friends, this evening I would speak with you very briefly. In ancient times it was deemed of merit to offer sacrifice to God or the gods, according to one's belief. Sacrifice is not required by the God Spirit, except the sacrifice of one's time and one's love. In ancient times men sacrificed each other., their loved ones, the animal kingdom, feeling that the taking of life was an offering to God. Returning to its creator the life that had been given, offering the carcass as food for the god. Jesus the Nazarene and many of the other great teachers, those who had true understanding of the nature of God have taught that sacrifice, the only sacrifice required by God is that of a loving heart. The God Spirit does not' require the destruction of those creatures which It has created. The spirit of light, the spirit of love exists within all of us, the spirit which is truth, which is understanding accepts a sacrifice, the love which you offer not only to God but to each other, to the life which the God Spirit has created. Each of you has the ability to love, the ability to give, the ability to heal, if not in a physical manner, to heal the hurt, the sorrow, the bereavement of other human beings.
To give of yourselves, to give of your understanding and of your knowledge, this is the true meaning of love. So often it is quoted that charity is cold. Now the true meaning of charity is love and giving with love. Jesus understood the true meaning of love and of giving, he said when upon earth: ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for a friend'. Now I would say to you that that means not always laying down life, in the sense of a physical death but giving of your life, giving of yourself, those who look after the sick, the old, the feeble, the difficult, - those who's minds are affected - this is love, this is giving. But it is also giving to be welcoming, to offer to those around you a smiling face, a look of warmth and affection. It is not easy I know to like all the other human beings with whom you may come into contact but love overcomes dislike, it overcomes all the differences which may be between you and another. If you are determined to do the will of the God Spirit, to offer love for hatred, understanding for impatience, peace for anger, then indeed you are well along the pathway to the true sacrifice required of you by the mind of God.
It is difficult always to look at life through another person’s eyes. Too often when upon this earth plane we see it only as it affects our own lives and personality, we do in fact believe that this world, this earth plane revolves around us, that we are the centre, the hub, the part that matters. We are indeed, of course, important, each and every one of us but that is the salient point, each of us is as important to the God Spirit as the next. For each one of us is given light through this great life force, the Creator of all things. There are many upon this earth who fail to understand this but their failure does not make them any the less near to God or any the less important. For you who have an understanding or are seeking understanding, you have the opportunity to give of yourself to those less fortunate, less able to understand. It may be that they will reject your giving, that they will spurn your gift of love and of understanding. But my friend if they do so, then the loss is theirs and not yours, for in giving you receive, you receive a wider understanding, a greater knowledge of the meaning of life and giving my friends is never wasted. It is said and said so often, that understanding comes only to those who admit their lack of it.
In many fields upon this earth plane there are those who will assume a knowledge they do not possess, all of us whatever the field of our endeavor have much to learn. We on this side of life have traveled the earthly road and as we travel through the realms of spirit, still we are learning all the time. There is much to be taught, much wisdom to be found, none of us ever can know all the answers, for they are with the God Spirit Itself. But as you advance further along the road of knowledge and of understanding, so you must pause and help those who have less traveled, less understood, less discovered than you. Giving, learning, loving, seeking that is the pathway to spiritual awareness and to atonement with the God Spirit. The sacrifice of self that is what is required. Not the loss of your individuality but a willingness to share it with others and so to enhance yourself and the lives of those around you. Sacrifice must be of yourself and not at the expense of another. Learn this and know that service is the purpose of living upon this earth, for to serve is to learn and to learn is to grow, both mentally and spiritually. Open your hearts and your minds and let the word of God guide you throughout the maze of life upon earth.
Mistaken Identity
Correct me if I address you wrongly, hello Marcus.
No my friend, do you not know that Marcus always when he comes greets you with: ‘I salute you. I'? In the Roman way. I am Mentor, of the same generation, it is true. [Not strictly correct, though Marcus always gives the Roman salute, he does not always say I salute you. Ed.]

Question. My question to you this evening concerns the son of a woman who works with me, he unfortunately was murdered two weeks ago and the police have no clue as to the killer and they did suggest to her that she might like to approach a medium. Are you in the spirit world allowed to help in a matter like this or must it be left to those of us here on the earth plane.
Yes my brother we are allowed - some of us - but it would need really to be a clairvoyant to help in such a matter. This is not truly my field nor any of us who work with this medium. We come as you know specifically to teach and this kind of investigation - for it would be so - you understand, it cannot be always an instant answer. I would feel that it is very possible for this lady to receive help in this manner but, just one moment, [long pause] I am being told by a lady on this side of life who's work it is to welcome those who come to us that this person remains in a state of shock and that it will be better left a while. She feels that if your friend attempts to make contact now it will fail. Leave it just say two or three weeks and then try.
Two Sets of Guides
Question. I appear to have two sets of spirit guides or two different sources of advice from the spirit world. The more I study the spirit world, the more chaotic it seems to be. One person here can be linked to various people in the spirit world who are not acquainted with each other and I find it very difficult to understand how such a chaotic place as the spirit world can operate.
We do not find it chaotic my brother. [Laughter]. You say that you have two sets of guides?
Well two sorts of advice, I don't know if they are guides or what they are.
This is something that you yourself must clarify. Now here I will give advice which we have many times spoken of before. Whatever comes to you from spirit, or purporting to be from spirit, you must never accept without question. Anything which to you seems illogical or foolish, you can and should question. Do you understand?
It is not a question of conflicting advice, the two sources agree with each other but they say they are not acquainted with each other.
Yes, but what I am saying now is generally not specifically for you, you understand? Because too often, especially those new to Spiritualism win expect just as many do, that what you see on your television or hear on your radio because it is there it must be correct. And so do people with spirits, if this message is given to me, then this must be right, even though it may seem quite ridiculous. Always remember that except in cases of direct voice or where as we can completely take over the body of this medium but clairaudience and clairvoyance are wonderful ways of communication. Do not feel that I am in any way diminishing their value but what I will say is, that kind of communication is open to the interpretation of the instrument to which it is transmitted and I am not saying that a medium is deliberately deluding you who receive the message or his or herself but as you know even the slightest change in the inflection of a word or a sentence, a change in punctuation can alter completely the true meaning. And so it is that messages or advice often seem somewhat muddled to those who receive them. So remember never never be afraid to question, whether it be a trance medium, a clairvoyant, a clairaudient, whatever, never be afraid to question anything which seems strange to you or that you do not understand.
To return to you my brother, it is I will say unusual to have two sources of advice that are completely unacquainted or unconnected with each other because normally on this side of life we work as groups. All the guides, the speakers, who come to you through this medium, we work together, we all are aware of our brethren, of our aim and of what we will say or do at any given time. It is unusual' but not impossible because, you see initially, those of us who are for instance seeking a medium, will be drawn by the light within the aura of a particular person. We will see from this that we can establish an affinity with them. Sometimes that person has come from this side of life specifically for the purpose of developing as an instrument for us to use.
What this really means to you is that two people have been attracted to you, they are drawn towards you and feel an affinity with you and therefore seek to advise you. I would say to you that since, as you say the advice does not conflict then obviously it must be correct and you are lucky in that it is all the time corroborated.
Good or Bad Luck
Question. About thirty years ago when in Cairo, I bought a crooked sceptre, it was made of lapis lazuli and said to be genuine and fifth to eight century before Christ. I took it to the British Museum and they confirmed it. I gave it to two mediums to hold and they said it's very very old. Another medium said to me I should not have bought it as it was used for some black art and it is not doing you any good; while another medium told me to take it with me whenever I go for an interview. Each time I intended taking it to the SAGB for psychometry, either I couldn't find it or when I got here the psychometry was caned off. Finally I put it into a metal box with a few stones and tossed it into the Thames. I have now been told by a friend who's a medium that I shouldn't have done it as it was bringing me good luck, but my circumstances haven't changed a bit. Did I do the right thing.
An extremely personal question [Laughter]. I would say to you this, there is nothing, no object upon this earth plane that can bring you either good luck or bad luck unless you allow it to do so. In other words it is a question of your own mind, your own personality. If you believe that something is evil, then you will draw those thoughts towards you. Now having said this I must qualify it because certainly there are objects which as it were soak-up the vibrations of those who use them. For instance a weapon which has been used to inflict violent death can be felt as it were by a medium. I have known this to happen where one who is psychically developed can touch an object and receive almost a physical shock or pain from it but that does not mean that the object itself can influence your life. It may be filled with the vibrations of the deed which it has been used to perform but it still cannot harm you. Many speak of black magic but again I would say to you no matter how powerful this may be and make no mistake it exists and has great power but if you have the faith and the knowledge that you are a part of the God Spirit then nothing on this earth plane or in the world of spirit can harm you.
Cases of possession exist but they only exist because the host has allowed another being to enter. I have seen many times because we do very much work in this field of rescue but although we work with the light, if my medium were to return now and say: 'Mentor, out', I could not stay. Do you understand? And so it is with the darkness, if the person they wish to influence, seek to possess says no and means it, then that being cannot enter, cannot influence, cannot take possession. But to be truthful, it may sound to you cynical, but we have found in many many cases the person who is possessed as they say, is in fact enjoying the notoriety. But truly my brother, it is very sad that you have as it were drowned this object after so many years but I can assure you that the influence on your way of life is neither good nor evil.
Never Predestination
Question. I would like to seek clarification as to whether we are put on this earth for a specific purpose and whether it is to work-out or resolve a problem which we have not overcome in a previous life. As a result of that do we choose our own destiny.
Yes my brother. Firstly I would say, none of you are put upon this earth plane, you have chosen to come. Each of you has the right to choose your own destiny, to choose the time and place, the parents, the brethren which you shall have upon this earth. There are many reasons for reincarnation, some as you say to learn a lesson, sometimes you come back to prove that in your last incarnation you learned your lesson well and that you can overcome the obstacles and difficulties which seemed impossible before. Others return in order to fulfil a task undertaken in the service of the God Spirit.
There are as many reasons as people for returning to this earth. There is no such thing as predestination, your lives are not mapped-out for you step by step, event by event. Those who have heard us speak before will know that this is so, for if your life were predetermined then one could not accept one of the greatest laws of the God Spirit, the immutable law which says that you are responsible for your own actions, that you reap that which you sow. If your life were predestined then you could not be held responsible either for actions of kindness or goodness or for criminal activity. One could murder and rape and steal and say, I cannot help it, this was determined for me. One great law is this law of personal responsibility, it is something which we must all come to understand and accept, that no one can absolve you from your actions. No priest hearing confession can grant absolution, for each one of us must work-out our own destiny, our own salvation. And even we who look over you, who try to guard you and advise you, even though we may feel on the edge of a precipice, we can only call-out hold back, we cannot prevent you from leaping down.
Life upon earth is an experience, it is a school, a time for learning, a time also for teaching, a time for reflecting and for meditating. To realize that each day must be lived as though it in itself were a separate life. One never can count upon tomorrow. Another old saying of my brother Manyomin, 'A good day to live is a good day to die'. That was the daily prayer of the Sioux; incorporated within the daily prayer. Meaning that all of us should be prepared to leave this earthly life at any time, realizing that what you call death, is not death, not an ending but a beginning, a reawakening from the world of shadows into the world of light. But do not spend your time upon earth looking toward what the ancients called heaven. Each moment of your lives is to be lived, to be enjoyed, to be learned from. I quote again from another old friend, 'that no experience, nothing in this life, whether it be good or bad, happy or sad, dark or light, is ever ever wasted unless you refuse to learn from it'. And it is never any good regretting what you may have done, what you may have said, for you can never retract; each word, each thought, each deed is unique, can never be undone, never be unspoken. Then, if you have uttered words which give pain, do not spend your life regretting them, rather seek to heal the wounds you have made. Remember next time to pause and to think before the mouth begins to frame the thought.
Our Guides
Question. Good evening Mentor. Could you give me a little information about our guides. When do they choose to become our guides; is it before we are born and how many guides does a person have.
One cannot put a number upon it. Usually you will have one who will accompany you as it were, from the group with which you are involved when upon this side of life, for we do work, not singly but in unit as it were and one who is that more advanced than yourself from within the group will seek to help and guide the returning soul throughout 196 time upon earth. Each one of you has - as it has been called in other parlance'- a guardian angel, such as this, one who devotes their time to helping you; cannot change your life for all the decisions are your own. You have freewill but that being will try as it were to knock upon the door of your mind and say be careful. But that is the true meaning of guide but it has become rather a loose term, it has been used to include people such as myself and the various other communicators who come through my medium. We are not guides in that sense, we are teachers, we have always been teachers; so that you may have one guide but many communicators, many who will seek to help you and teach you but one only who is specifically devoted to caring for your spiritual welfare.
Further question. I have spoken to my guide through a medium but this medium is no longer in England, can I speak to him again through another medium.
Well certainly but the best way of communicating is to meditate, to open your mind and allow him to communicate to you directly. This is possible for each one of you but it does take patience. It is far better always to hear directly than through a third person. But I am certain that the guide you speak of would be very willing to come through and speak to you with another medium.
Astrology
Question. What are your feelings on the subject of astrology. Is there any truth in it.
Yes there is truth, the stars influence the earth by their magnetic field. They influence the lives of those born under them but they do not cause particular events. It is more an influence of character, of the manner of life but within that there are variations. One cannot say that everyone born under such and such a star is thus. Do you understand? But a horoscope drawn correctly at the time of birth will show the tendency and the character traits that that person will possess but remember whatever the influences, either of the stars or of your environment, you are the person that decides your life. I know my medium has a very favourite play of the poet you called Shakespeare and within that play there are the lines: 'The fault dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves but we are underlings'. And so it is, whether you be indeed underlings or whether you move towards the top, it is you who motivates yourself but certainly it is not, as many would say, not the influence of the stars there but they do not direct your pathway.
Vegetarianism
[Question. Referring to the teachings of Silver Birch on vegetarianism and the Bible story of Jesus feeding the multitude with loaves and fishes, the latter being contrary to vegetarianism, how can this be explained].
That my brother was an allegory rather than a fact. Too much within the Bible is taken literally. Jesus spoke rather of the spiritual than the physical hunger. He sent among the five thousand his disciples - remember in those days there were no microphones, no way of relaying sound - and what in fact happened was that he said go forth, spread my word, give the bread of understanding, give the fish of knowledge. Jesus had compassion upon the creatures of this earth. I cannot say whether or not he was completely a vegetarian; many of us, I was not when upon earth but as one becomes more aware of truth, one recognizes the cruelty as did Silver Birch ' which man inflicts upon these creatures who offer nothing but loyalty and trust and are rewarded with fear and with death. Today upon this earth you not even give these creatures the joy of living even though their lives may be short. They are bred and housed in a cruel and inhuman manner, their time upon earth is misery. It is the same with the animals used in laboratory experiments, a life of suffering ending in death. Some say that is their service, that is their sacrifice; how can it be since they are given no choice?
The time will come when man awakens to his responsibility towards the animal kingdom, when this cruelty will cease. It cannot be justified under any circumstances, it is not necessary for man to eat flesh. It is far healthier if you do not. This is not something which is merely a moral issue, it has been scientifically proved that those who do not eat flesh cost your health service a quarter of that spent on those of you who remain carnivorous. I would ask you to think on this. How many of you would be able to go out and kill your own meat? I know this is something again which my medium feels very strongly about and I have heard her say on many occasions: 'I would have more respect for you if you went and killed your own'. But so often the answer is: 'but I do not kill'. At least in the ancient times man went out and hunted and killed for food and it was a fair [fairer] fight between man and beast. Today these poor creatures are herded and slaughtered in their millions daily and if only you could see the fear, the feeling of betrayal and resentment that this engenders, then you I am sure would think again and think carefully.
To end I would say, that those who use animals for medical experiments are living in a fools paradise, for never will lasting good be gained from the torture of one of God's creatures, for remember the spirit of life is within them also and they are as much a part of life as are you and have the right to their life upon earth, in freedom and freedom from fear.

O Spirit of Life, Spirit of Truth, Great God of all beings, may Thy light shine upon these Thy children. May they feel each one of them, the warmth of Thy love within their heart, may their eyes be opened to Thy glory, may Thy wisdom go before them. May they feel peace and love and understanding, may Thy tranquillity enter their soul and may the light of Thy love go before them, leading them always onwards into Thy kingdom of light.
