May God be with you, I give you greetings.My friends, tonight I will speak to you briefly, so that you may have the greater time to spend upon your questions.
Life upon earth is always in one way or another a difficult pathway to tread. We come to earth in order to learn, in order to prove ourselves and to gain experience of how to be tolerant towards each other. Many times during earth life we are beset by fear and by doubt. Doubt of the reality of the God Spirit, doubt about what we receive during our religious teaching. Many of the religions of orthodoxy are based upon fear. Those who follow are told that if they do not, they will in one way or another be punished with a rejection. The ancient Jewish religion taught of a god of vengeance, one to whom sacrifice must be made in order that he may be appeased. It was taught that one should take an eye for an eye, a life for a life. And in this the Jews were not alone, for most of the ancient gods, ruled by fear; demanded sacrifice, demanded obedience. The God Spirit is not a god of fear, but a god of love. This the more recent teachers taught; Jesus the Nazarene, who spoke of God as a Father, the founder of the family of mankind. The Father of the universe to whom one could speak, to whom one could appeal and who would always listen. This great being of love, does not confine that love to any one nation or any one religion.
Spiritualism teaches the universality of the spirit of life and of love. Man chooses to split himself up, to split the nations into various denominations, various beliefs, but the love of the God Spirit transcends all this. And we in the world of spirit seek to convey to you, this love, this unending compassion, this tolerance for the frailties of humanity. Throughout the ages there have been those who prophesized truth, those who saw through the trappings; the ritual of orthodoxy to the root of truth, the pearl within. Which is the knowledge that God is for all of you, the knowledge that life cannot be extinguished, that it is a continuous roadway, leading back to the source of life. Those who have realized the futility of quarrelling, of warfare, those who realize that the laws of God are the laws of freedom, of a free people, that do not restrict but enhance the lives of those who follow them.
The family of man is as mixed as your individual family, no two individuals are alike. The difficulty about life on earth is learning to tolerate and to attempt to understand those whose lives, whose cultures, whose views and ideals differ from your own. There is a place for many ways of thought; who is to say that one is entirely right and another entirely wrong. Some of you are more advanced, both mentally and spiritually than others, but the others - the ignorant - are no less dear to the God Spirit. Remember, there is all eternity in which to discover truth, all eternity in which to develop your own spirituality. But those of you who have discovered already that life is immortal, that you cannot destroy another being; you can only kill the physical part, but the immortal part - the spirit, the soul - can never be destroyed. It will go on, it will develop no matter how much either it or you may wish otherwise. To destroy another being is futile, it is a waste of energy. To live at peace, one with the other, even though it may be difficult, that is the way, the way to develop yourselves, the way to the kingdom of the God Spirit. And it is to that end that we come to you, to give you the courage to stand by what you have discovered, what you believe, what you know to be true, in the face of fear, in the face of misunderstanding; of ridicule.
Stand fast, for you have found within yourselves, the seed, the beginning of truth. Never turn back from the pathway of light, for it leads you forward towards that atonement with the God Spirit, which is the purpose of being, the reason of living. Each of you, have within yourselves unlimited opportunity for development. Your life upon earth may be difficult, it may be fraught with fear, but my friends, know that fear too is a waste of energy. For if you know that within yourselves there is the power of the God Spirit, then life can hold no terror and death no fear. For death is but the gateway of living. Once you conquer within yourself the tendency to worry, to fear, and know with certainty that you yourselves are part of the God Spirit, that you yourselves have immortality, then will you come to the realization that there is nothing upon this earth or in the spirit world that can harm the essential you; for you are indeed invincible. If you know that the spirit world is with you, that the power of God is with you, then fear is dead forever.
Epilepsy and Schizophrenia
Question: What are the causes of epilepsy and schizophrenia.
Two separate conditions. There can be as always, more than one cause. Do you understand? With epilepsy, it can be brought about by a kind of shock, it can follow an accident or it can - as very often is - be a hereditary condition, which is caused by those strange and often misunderstood things, genes. Something which will come down from one generation to another, sometimes missing one or two and occurring again.
Schizophrenia is caused most often by a physical malformation within the brain. Do you understand me? There are cases sometimes diagnosed as schizophrenia, which are in fact caused by possession. This occurs generally speaking when the subject has the potential to develop psychic powers, but is unaware of it. However, it would not happen to a person of strong and determined will, but one who was weak and weakened by misuse of the physical body; drink, drugs, etc. In which case the ability to deny access to those on this side of life, who desire mischief, would be lost. Do you understand me? While speaking of this, I win, emphasize very strongly, that anyone who desires - shall we say - ridicule of the world of spirit, those who enter into the communication with spirit, to make game, do so at their peril. For there are always those on this side of life - the darker side - who desire to find instruments through which they may work their mischief or their evil, creating darkness upon earth and convincing many, that contact with the spirit world can only lead to madness, to evil; that all who come from here to speak with you are creatures of the lord of darkness. Jesus to his followers said: 'test the spirit, by their light you shall know them', and I say to you, remember always to work in the light, and only light then will come to you.
These problems - so called mental problems - are caused also by an imbalance between the spiritual side of a person and the physical. Always throughout life upon earth, one must strive to remain even. Do you understand? Too often, sadly throughout the earth plane today the emphasis is upon the material, material gain, material power, to the detriment of spiritual development. But just as Wrong are those who live only in the world of spirit and forget that they are for the time enclosed in a physical body and that they have physical lives to lead. Balance always in all things. Gradually, as man grows in stature, many of these problems will disappear. Remember, for many many years, whilst upon earth, we have misused and abused, not only the earth plane, but ourselves; as the laws of sowing and reaping, not only apply to individuals, but to creation as a whole. Many of the diseases, both mental and physical, which we now suffer - which you now suffer - are brought about by this abuse in past years.
Prolonging Life Artificially
Question: Should we prolong life by artificial means, such as keeping a comatose person alive for an indefinite period by means of a life support machine.
This is a very different situation to what you call euthanasia. For that life, that spirit would have left the physical body had it been allowed to do so. Do you understand? Therefore, keeping a body alive by machinery, is indeed holding back the spirit within. Truly, a body that is kept alive is no longer habitable and the spirit within would, I can assure you, would desire to leave it. Certainly when that being is, as you put it, in a coma for a very long time, it is from our point of view quite wrong to continue. To terminate a life, merely because the physical suffering is great, is just as wrong. Do you understand? But the two situations are quite different. Whenever the spirit is ready to leave, I say the spirit advisedly, because often what appears to be the person, do you understand me? is merely the functioning of the brain. [Here there were some four or five words in another language]. You see, when a person is suffering and diseased they may well express the desire to leave that body, but that is the physical part which is speaking, do you understand me? The true spirit within win say no, I know I must wait until the time is right for me to leave. But that is deep within the subconscious. When the time is right the spirit will come and remain in the world of spirit. And it is far better so, because the awakening on this side is natural. I know there are many, and many who are Spiritualists who believe that suffering should be ended and the spirit released. I can assure you that nature knows best.
Heaven and Earth
Question: What did Jesus mean when he said: ‘heaven and earth will pass away, but my word shall not pass away'.
Heaven and earth. The words, the true words which he spoke - not always as they are reported - were the laws of the God Spirit. Do you understand? Not the laws given my Moses necessarily, but Jesus came to earth not as the Christians would have you believe as a god, but as man. He was however, fulfilling a task undertaken for the God Spirit. The task of bringing hope where there was despair. Of trying to make men realize that God is the creator of love and not fear. The words which he spoke move out into the ether - into eternity - and win remain, as do your own words, forever. When he spoke of heaven and earth passing away, he meant the heaven and the hell which had been for many years preached. And when he spoke of earth passing; earth as you know it, will in the end pass away. Not in a shower of sparks, in a black hole as your scientists would have you believe, but changing, not the physical earth, but those that dwell upon it. For the plan of God is that each and every being dwelling upon earth, shall come into this atonement, this final perfection which is a blending back into the source of light. A complete harmony of thought and feeling and being. In this respect, earth shall pass away; the kingdom of God shall be made manifest upon it.
The truth which Jesus brought, the truth which many others too have spoken will remain, because truth cannot be destroyed. You can try to distort it, as man have done, but the essence of it remains. The truth that the God Spirit is not a myth, not a legend, not a figure, but an almighty power; which has not shape, but is pure thought, pure love, pure understanding and pure compassion. That spirit of life which dwells in every cell of life, which is a part of each one of us. A part which many choose to hide, but which nevertheless they’re there. That the words of God, which Jesus brought to earth, cannot and shall not pass away. There are those who heed them, those who scorn them, those who would deny them, but they cannot erase them.
Animal Euthanasia
Question: Referring to a previous question; what is the position about the mercy killing of animals. Is it wrong to put them to sleep.
My brother, yes. You are equally wrong to slaughter them. I know that many of you feel that you cannot bear to see suffering, but is that not the operative word, you cannot bear. In nature, in the wild, an animal will sense that his life is drawing to a close, it will often move away by itself quietly and allow itself to drift into the world of spirit. Animals in many ways are far nearer to the God Spirit than man, for they do not question, they have an inner knowledge, an inner strength and far greater endurance than many of you realize. Now I know when my medium listens to this, she will not entirely agree, and I know that for many of you, this is a dreadful decision which you have to make. But I would say to you, think very carefully. You can you know, give much ease to the passage, not only of your animals, but of each other also. The power of healing, the can to spirit, to help - you will find very often with a very sick animal - if you have the courage within you to hold back from the decision, to give healing, to ask those who care particularly for the animal kingdom, to help, that the creature will sleep and in sleeping, pass. I can only say to you that since neither we nor you can give life; that it is a gift of the God Spirit. Then my friends it is for the God Spirit to receive it back.
Mental Illness
Question: Does mental illness affect the spirit.
Quite simply my dear, it does not. Brain is a physical part, spirit is quite separate. Do you understand? This applies also to those whom you term mentally deficient. You look upon these with pity; it is said sometimes that a person is merely a cabbage, but despite all this within that being the spirit is unaffected. Do you understand? It may have come into such a body for a particular purpose of its own. It may be that those around need a lesson in compassion and in caring. Who knows; there are many reasons, many reasons for returning to earth. But remember whatever the physical condition, the spirit is not affected. It may need - or come into this side - a rest, particularly if the passing is violent. Do you understand me? Because it is a shock, but spirit cannot be affected by physical conditions and the brain remember is not the person, but just a machine through which spirit is able to express itself.
Quality of Mediumship
Question: Does the quality of mediumship today leave much to be desired.
Well, possible but that is - I would say - meant by me as a criticism in general, because there are many very fine instruments upon this earth. But there are also' those who are not fully developed as they should be, before attempting, perhaps with the best will possible to give out, to demonstrate. Do you understand me? Again, there are many mediums who fail to realize that what comes from spirit must be given exactly as spirit has passed it to them. All too often mediums - shall we say - tone-down or tidy-up what they are given. Sometimes a message may seem to them harsh and they change it just a little, but in that case they alter completely the meaning which it should have for the recipient. Also, as many of you must realize, there are many upon this side of life trying desperately to contact their own loved ones. And sometimes the way - well shall we say - the wires can get crossed, do you understand? So that you receive something which is not applicable to you at all.
I would say again to all of you, never be afraid to say no, never be afraid to question or to say you do not understand. There are many today upon the platform who when they cannot get confirmation of the message they are attempting to pass to you, will say: ‘well, you may remember later', so you may. but that is too easy a way out. The medium should attempt if the recipient does not understand, to find out why. Do you follow me? But the blame doesn't lie only with the medium; all too often with the congregation themselves. They grasp at messages and this is wrong, because it does not help you, it does not help the spirit who is trying to communicate or the medium. The essence of Spiritualism is truth and all phenomena must be based upon this. Otherwise you open yourselves to charlatanism and from the outside to scepticism and ridicule.
Transfiguration
Question: Good evening. Is it possible to control involuntary phenomena and physical transfiguration.
Well yes my brother, it should be possible to control any phenomena whatsoever. I tell you that again because I know that all of us have said it many times. If you receive that which you do not want, all you have to do is to say, no. Once you are within your physical body, then you are in charge of it. Do you understand? And the spirit world should use your body only with your permission. If my medium were to come back now and say 'get out', then I should have to leave. If physical phenomena occurs, and I mean true physical phenomena; the building up upon a face that all can see. Do you follow me? Then it must be with the permission of the' medium - the instrument - but there is difference when just perhaps one or two people may say they can see a face upon a face, do you understand? That could be a clairvoyant vision rather than true physical transfiguration.
Further question to clarify: But what I meant was that the person who transfigures is not aware of it until he or she sees the people looking at her.
They should be.
Questioner: When they find they are transfiguring.
Yes, you can, you just say no, I do not want it. Any kind of mediumship should be controlled. If you sit for development, then it must be a certain time, a certain place. This does not mean that perhaps the spirit world may speak to you clairaudiently when you are by yourself or so on. You understand? But if you are developing phenomena, then you are in control; you must be in control and you must make it clear. Remember that very often it is not only you who are developing but those who wish to communicate with you or through you. There are of course guides, those who come from the higher realms to help, to speak, but there are many, there are vast numbers of people upon this side of life, who are very very anxious, having found themselves alive, to prove themselves alive and to communicate. Do you understand? But they are not necessarily experienced communicators and they need to be controlled and restricted, just as do you upon earth.
Agnosticism
Question: How would an agnostic accept the world of spirit on passing.
If you had no knowledge at all, if you became suddenly transported in the world of spirit and you found that you still had a form; you could speak, you could see, you could hear. Having believed that death was the end, you would find it very difficult to accept that you were in the technical sense dead, when you appear to be still alive. Do you follow me? I know it sounds strange but for many years my medium was the medium for a rescue circle and we found very often, the only way to convince such a being that they were in fact in the world of spirit, was to put them into this body and say: ‘feel that'. Especially, if they were male. You see, not only those who believe because they have been taught so, that they should find themselves in purgatory; find it very difficult to adjust to another kind of knowledge. Do you understand? You would not find this occurring with one who has professed that there is nothing, null, void; to accept that they still appear to be as they were upon earth. Another way is to bring them back, though it is not always the best preparation for, the reawakening into life.
In most cases, we are able to release them, to help them. But there are those old souls who come back to earth because they have harboured a grievance, because they have suffered greatly in one particular place and feel resentment and with that resentment, with that hatred are unable to release themselves from it. An these beings need understanding and love. Above all, love and light. Remember, those who have created darkness upon earth, create darkness for themselves here and until they realize and desire something better, we are unable to assist them. I know I regress a little, but I would say to you, all of you who have found this knowledge of truth, try with all the love that has been given you from the God Spirit to expand that love, to extend it and to wrap it around those whom the earth condemns as evil, for they my friends need that love so desperately, in order that they may lift themselves out of the darkness and turn again into the light.
Light in Darkness
Question: Good evening. Could you tell me if on your side of life you have contact with those who are still in darkness and do you have any influence over them; can you influence them to see the light, and also are they in any way in a position to influence those who have seen the light.
We cannot influence them against their will. Remember, each and every human being - every being - has freewill. You have also with that free win, personal responsibility. Again the old laws of sowing and reaping. There is not on this side of life, a hall of judgement as the ancients believed. Whilst you are upon earth, you build your own dwelling upon this side of life, be it light or dark. You judge yourselves, not we. We cannot compel in either direction, we can only wait; we can speak to those in the darkness. We can tell them of the light that awaits them, but they must work out their own destiny, their own atonement - it may be - their own salvation. Once they have evinced a desire for something better, then there are many many hands outstretched to welcome them, to lift them up, to show them the pathway of light. Once a being has found light, then those of the darkness cannot influence them, they cannot drag them back. Upon earth, those who I have said to you, are weak, those who are inclined towards the darkness can indeed be influenced by those of the darker side, here in the spirit world. For there is a darker side, make no mistake. There is a power of darkness, and it is a continual battle between the light and the dark. It is the will of the God Spirit that the kingdom of love shall become manifest upon this earth. This can only happen when each and every being upon this earth plane, turns from the darkness into the light.
I know that very often it seems to you an impossibility; earth is steeped in blood, steeped in violence, in degradation, in warfare. But my friend the time will come when this shall cease. For many among you - many of the younger among you are turning from this violent age desiring to see something better, searching for. the beginning of truth. Therefore never despair, but let your light shine and your light spread, that the words of truth that you know in your heart, can be spread, scattered, as the seed from the sower, and that some of that seed, some of that truth shall fall upon rich and fertile soil and shall in its turn grow. The harvest shall be great. Do not be discouraged, let your thoughts go forth both to those upon earth and those in the world of spirit who so desperately need your help. And those of you who are strong enough spiritually and mentally, try to send out extra special thoughts to those whom the world has considered evil. They need your love, they need your feelings, they need your light, for there are many thoughts of darkness sent towards them making their struggle to clamber out of the darkness more and more difficult.
It is whilst you are upon earth, very hard I know not to feel hatred, not to feel resentment and revulsion, but you who knows the world of spirit; you can at least attempt to find true compassion. Not only for the victims, but for those who perpetrate crime. Jesus the Nazarene said once: ‘it is not the whole that need the physician, but those who are sick'. Look upon them - the creatures of darkness - as suffering sick beings, in need not of hatred, but of love.
Epilogue
I thank you all once again for your love and for your questions. It helps us greatly to know what you are thinking and what you need to know. We do of course have the advantage of being able to judge from your thoughts, but you help each other by your questions, not only yourselves.
And now if you will bear with me, I will close with a prayer of my people.
O Great Spirit of light, of truth, of being. You who guide along the sacred path, let the feet of these Thy children never turn aside. May the trail they follow be a trail of light, may the wind of understanding blow through their souls, may their lips speak only truth, may their eyes see only light, may their hearts feel only love. May they be ever and always not only Your servants, but Your children. May they look upon each as family, may they guide the weak, may they curb the strong, may they look with clear eyes upon the dawn and may they look still upon the moonlight, that light that shines in truth, which gives to men the ability to walk through the darkness, seeing always light. We praise Thee O Father for the light of the sun, for the rain which drives away the dust, which brings forth the fruits of the earth. May Thy light and Thy love bring forth the fruits of spirit from each of these who seek to know. May they be prepared each day to live, and each to die. For in dying we must find light, the light which comes closer to Thee.
