My friends, we speak very often to you of the necessity for unity, for harmony within your lives, of the need to be tolerant and understanding of those around you. This evening I would speak of the importance [of] keeping the unity, keeping the harmony but retaining your own individuality. Upon the earth plane today there are many who follow without question, who do not have the courage to question whether it be in a political sense, in religion [or] educational. Too often people are ready to follow like sheep, perhaps I should say like sheep to the slaughter. You see the effects of this in wartime, especially now when many nations are rent by civil war, by famine, by poverty but there are few who have the courage to stand forth and say this I cannot accept, it is against my belief, my principles, my knowledge. Even the strongest amongst us tends to be influenced by those with differing ideas; we are open to persuasion. Now I am not suggesting that you enclose yourself in a capsule of bigotry and are not therefore open to listen to other ideas, to look upon other ways of doing things, other ways of living but I do say to you that you should accept only that which does not conflict with your innermost belief, innermost knowledge. When you come into the world of spirit, as you know, you will find there accounts of all you have said and done and thought during your earthly incarnation. It is you who will judge, yourself but nevertheless you will find that it is not sufficient to say, I acted under orders or I acted thus because I was told so and so. You are an individual and you are therefore responsible for yourselves, only for yourselves.

As you grow in understanding so you form certain ideas, maybe gleaned from others but your own mind works to a pattern, you decide which pathway is right for you. You decide your own diet, your clothing, where and how you live; you must decide also your own spiritual pathway, you must decide what in life is right for you. Devise your own set of morals, your own set of principles but once you are sure of them, once you are sure of your path, then do not be led astray by others. Hold your own individuality but at the same time recognizing the brotherhood or sisterhood of mankind. You are indeed all a part of one creation but you are nevertheless, each and every one of you quite unique, you have your place in the scheme of this earth plane but to fill it to the best of your ability you must be in control of yourselves and of your own lives. You cannot expect spirit to lead your lives for you, you cannot expect another to be responsible for your actions. You are indeed a part of each other but that does not give you the right to evade your responsibilities or to place the onus of decision and responsibility upon the shoulders of another. Neither does it give you the right to imagine that. because you have a special knowledge because you have found a way that is right for you, to impose it upon others.

Every being upon this earth must eventually come into the understanding of the meaning and the purpose of life, come into the understanding of the will of God but it must not be by compulsion. Much of the trouble upon this earth today is because too few people imagine that they know the best way of life for the masses of people. We have said before - I know my brother Marcus has spoken to you and said - that Jesus the Nazarene was the greatest communist of them all and communism in theory is a wonderful way of life, the idea of sharing, of being certain that all will give for one and one for all but my friends it is only a theory for in practice it cannot be until man comes to understand the nature of the kingdom of God, until he voluntarily becomes aware of the need of the rest of creation. It cannot and must not be by compulsion any more than the sharing of your own knowledge, the knowledge that life is eternal,

that man is immortal, that all created life goes on and on evolving in the world of spirit just as it does upon earth. It is a wonderful knowledge, not merely a belief or a faith but a truth which cannot be denied but even the comfort of knowing this cannot be impinged upon another. You can offer it yes but you cannot compel them to believe or to follow your pathway. What is right for you may well be not right at an for another for they are not yet ready to accept truth. They cannot face the burden of responsibility which this knowledge places upon you.

For if you know that your life continues, you realize the futility of war, the futility of violence, you know that it is by love and by sharing that you WW bring the kingdom of God to be manifest upon this earth. It cannot be by bloodshed or by violence; all too often in past years there have been wars created in the name of religion, the belief that by destroying the physical body, one could save the soul so enclosed is quite false. Much torment, much suffering, imprisonment, execution have been inflicted in the name of God but God the Creator, the Spirit of Light is a being of love, of understanding and compassion. Any violence committed in the name of God, I tell you my friends is the worst form of blasphemy, that man could ever envisage. The Spirit of Life which gave to you, each one of you, your life, the birthright of freewill, is a being all seeing, all wise and all loving. It is the mind which created the universe and of which each one of us is a part. We are here in order that the will of God may be made manifest, that the kingdom may come upon earth and that eventually all creation both upon earth and throughout the universe shall come into harmony, that peace shall reign as the God Spirit had willed it. Learn to accept that which you know in your hearts to be true but never be lead by those who have little understanding, do not allow yourself to be directed away from that which you know in yourself to be true.

So much pain and suffering upon earth have been brought about through the individuals inability to withstand the hypnotic words of false prophets, false leaders. Those who preach nationalism, those who preach that one particular sect or religion is right and the only one to follow, the only one which will bring you into salvation and that the God Spirit condemns all other ways of thinking, all other beliefs, all other ways of living. The Spirit of Life has love for all creation, even for those who reject the existence of God. My friends you can reject, you can deny all you please but the God Spirit is and those who deny it will discover otherwise, not as many would have you believe to their cost but we pray, to their everlasting joy and comfort. Remember you are you and none other; you, the ego inside you is what will go on and on throughout eternity, no matter whether you return to earth or stay in the spirit world, your spiritual evolution will continue, you cannot be destroyed, you are and you cannot die.

The United Nations

Question. Looking back over the past few years and how passive the United Nations has become, I feel now that perhaps they have got to take up arms. Do you advocate that they still remain passive?

Not really my brother. What I would say to you is that upon the earth today we do not condone actions of warfare, we do not condone individual acts of violence, neither it is realized can you stand aside and allow tyranny and destruction to go unchecked. Do you understand me? But what we do say is that it should aim to be restraint rather than punishment.

But it still means taking up arms?

It means taking up arms which truly should not be. What we on this side of life aim for is to bring the leaders of nations back to their senses, to teach that it is always better, to talk, to discuss, to attempt to understand. I know in your. present climate this often has failed, that it has become inevitable that men who would prefer to remain at peace are compelled, as you say, to take up arms, rather than to allow the slaughter of innocent people to continue. It is something which we would deplore but realize until man learns to understand, it will be unfortunately necessary to use violence to some extent but we would impress upon you that it should be the minimum in order to achieve your goal. What you as individuals can do is to recognize the power which lies within you, each one of you, to control much of the violence upon earth, by thought. I know you win say it has little effect but I tell you now you cannot measure the power that your thoughts do invoke. If there were enough people upon this earth who fixed their minds and their thoughts to bringing peace, it would happen. Unfortunately there are as you well know, not enough who have the faith and conviction to do so. There are those who are all too ready to take up arms, not necessarily merely for the prevention of escalating violence but frankly because they enjoy it and this is wrong.

Too often there is this feeling that because someone or something is foreign to you it is also a threat, we try to teach - not merely here - all over the earth plane, where there are ears that will hear us, the value of learning about other cultures, other religions, other political systems, for to learn is to begin to understand and to understand is the beginning of friendship, the beginning of love, the enemy of warfare.

Question. Do we have the power to protect ourselves and others with our energy and with our thoughts.

To protect yourselves against what?

Questioner. Against evil or aggression.

You do up to a point. It is possible, very possible to protect yourselves if you will devote the time and the energy to doing so but unfortunately upon this earth today, there are very few with the time or the energy to do so. You are so busy with the material things of this earth that I know it is difficult to find a time of quietness, a time of peace when you can be alone with yourself. To develop this power of protection, it is very necessary to be at peace within yourself, to learn how to protect yourself; your thoughts. The magnetic field which surrounds you and is an integral part of your being is controllable by your own mind and you can, I'm saying, very few of you will do but you can form around yourself a circle which cannot be penetrated either by spirit or by a physical being. There are many upon earth who have developed this ability, it is something which you can all develop but very few will. It the same as removing yourself from your body and remembering all these things are possible, they are not merely figments of the imagination, they are not merely for the occultist. Back through the ages there have been those termed, magicians, sorcerers who have developed this ability, this power to hold at bay, so that one coming to attack would feel themselves almost up against a physical wall. Do you understand? But you must learn through meditation, through study, through contact with your own particular guides in spirit, to project this field, to surround yourself so that nothing and no one can touch you. Not impossible but very difficult to achieve in this particular environment.

Question. Have you got any advice on contacting ones guide or guides.

This is a question often asked. I can only say to you In general terms that the first step to contact the world of spirit involves, in the same way as projecting this field, quietness within yourself. The ability to sit, not in a developing circle initially but by yourself fixing your mind upon one particular thing, - it does not matter what - it can be a jewel, a flower, a picture but examine that object, let that fill your mind. Do you understand? Shutting out other things; this is merely a discipline, an exercise to concentrate you thoughts and your mind in one direction. I know how difficult this can be, how when we sit quietly, suddenly the worries of earth come in to the mind, the daily happenings, the people you have met but this you must deny access to and then think of yourself as channeling through, you imagine, if you will, a pathway from this plane through to the spirit world and to set your feet upon that pathway, excluding all else, look along your path to the goal ahead, to the light and in that light, not at first but eventually. you win find the contact that you need. You must become aware of the world of spirit of which you are a part; although you are at the moment a physical being upon earth, yet you still are a part of the spirit world, for it is your spirit which goes on.

Try to open yourself and be aware of the spirit within yourself, the voice which tells you when you are in a quandary, yes or no, the voice of the God Spirit. Follow that voice, follow your pathway into the light and your guides win make themselves known to you. It may not be that you will see, it may not be that you will hear it as an outside voice but you will hear it within yourself and they WW, if you desire it, make themselves known to you and this is by far the better way, rather than having an outside person saying to you, such and such is your guide. For all the teachers, - the great teachers - Jesus, Buddha and so on, had taught their disciples to look for the light. This is the way to test those who purport to be your guides. The light which surrounds them will show you their worth, for the darkness cannot fade light and those who come with truth and understanding as their gifts to you will be surrounded, filled with light. This is not just for you as an individual but for all. Test the spirit, said Jesus, by their light you shall know them and this is advice I would give to you all. Never accept, that which is not of the light.

Today upon earth, those who call themselves followers of Christ, many among them condemn the world of spirit, they say we are creatures of evil, that the devil lies in us and I would quote back to them, the words of the man they say they follow: ‘That a house divided against itself shall fall' and therefore the lords of darkness cannot pretend to be light, for in bringing light they would destroy themselves. Look always for light and if your motives, your desires are true, that you seek to find truth, you seek understanding and above all you seek to give service, not only to the God Spirit but to creation. Then, I tell you, what you ask shall be given you and given you without stint.

Question. Since coming to the lectures here, I have been made aware of the power of thought and how one should try to control it but I have to say, monitoring my actions, I have become quite despondent. Thoughts course through my mind during the day, some of them charitable, some of them resentful but I find it difficult to concentrate, while at the same time my standards have been raised in, at least trying to direct them and concentrate without too much deviation.

I am so glad that your standards have been raised. I do sympathize with your difficulties; I would say to you this, do not try to run before you have learned to walk and do not despair. We all set ourselves standards by which we live both' upon earth and upon this side of life. For I tell you now, we all are learning, we all are evolving, there is always a difficulty in living up to the standards you set yourself. That my brother is a sign of growth, a sign of the beginning of true understanding; those who are complacent with their lives are either arrogant or fools. To admit that you are not what you would wish to be is to show humility, to show the desire to grow up, to become mature in spirit as well as in body. If you remember, Saul of Tarsus said: 'I do that which I would not and leave undone that which I should do'. It is so with all of us my brother because despite all our high desires we remain human beings, we are not God, though God dwells in us. It is the will, the desire to improve, the desire to reach perfection; it is the trying that is important. I tell you that eventually you will succeed, it may not even be in this life but you will because you desire it because your motives are good.

My friend Fu who never speaks to you in public but is a very wise old lama, the one who says you should think before you think; he has always said never waste time regretting, a word, an action, a thought, for nothing is ever wasted,* no experience, no word, no thought, no deed unless you refuse to learn from it. Remember that my brother when you feel despair, do not despair that you have' been resentful or spiteful but find out why you felt this. Learn then a little more about yourself and about your environment, what motivated you, what made you think thus, why did you do that which hurt another and, as so often happens, if you unwittingly wounded another, then find out why, not why you said what you said or did what you did but why it hurt that person so; for again you win learn what to avoid. This earth is a school, a school in which you can both learn and teach; to make the most of your years here determine that no moment of your time here shall be wasted. Set yourselves a goal yes but never despair if you do not immediately obtain it. Self-control, control of mind, control of thought takes many years to learn my brother but the result is worth the effort. *[Except time? Ed].

Visualization

It Is thought, it is thought pictures, pictures which you build-up in your mind and certainly visualization has a great deal of benefit when healing, it should be a positive thought and if the healer has a true understanding of the disease or his guide or her guide can convey it, you can imagine the diseased part of the body as gradually changing its condition. Do you understand? Building-up the cells which are healthy and driving-out those which are not. Visualization needs care in its development but it can be a great aid both to understanding and to healing, healing of the body and healing of the mind and certainly if you achieve visualization during meditation it is an aid to that also.

More on Homosexuality

[Question. On homosexuality and the possibility of it being related to certain genes; on aborting a foetus containing such a gene and also the position concerning AIDS. [See also Chapter 23].

Homosexuality is not necessarily a hereditary condition as this would seem to apply. It is an imbalance of the hormones within the body, as you probably know but it is not something which should be condemned, neither should a child be aborted because of the possibility of it being either homosexual or lesbian. Do you understand? It is a condition which was recognized in ancient times as a third sex, it was not condemned. I speak of way back at the beginning and many of the ancient cultures such as Greece where they recognized this. The violence [of abortion] is not confined to homosexuals. I do not feel, I am being told, no there is not a possibility of it [AIDS] becoming airborne, it is by direct physical contact and no other way.

When you speak of abortion and I say to you now that this is and always will be a wrong, it is blot upon mankind. The spirit enters at the moment of conception and even should you destroy at that moment you have still refused spirit an earthly incarnation, you have destroyed physical life. There is no difference at, all between taking the life of an unborn child and murdering either an infant or an adult already incarnate upon this earth. You cannot of course destroy the spirit but you have denied that being its time upon earth and this is wrong. One must learn reverence for life and not merely the life of mankind but all life, for all life contains the Spirit of God; destruction of life is wrong. I should say destruction of physical life, for you cannot destroy the spirit.

These beings, because you know it does not occur only in man but in the animal kingdom; well we are part of the animal kingdom, we are all animals, mammals and this homosexuality, this third sex occurs throughout the animal kingdom. It is not something to be scorned and is quite different from heterosexuals using perversion. There is a very great difference and these beings should be met with understanding rather than revulsion.

A Blank Mind

Question. Is emptying your mind completely of all thoughts the best way to meditate and link with the spirit world.

Well my brother, it is whatever is the best method for you, again you retain your individuality, it is what I was speaking about in the very beginning. If you find that you can empty your mind thus, then that is the way for you but for others visualization is something which helps their minds to concentrate upon this link with spirit, you understand? You can visualize yourself linking, there are many forms of visualization, you visualize an object or you can visualize yourself within a different environment, within the next sphere of life but if you find that you are able completely to empty your mind and receive linking, then that is fine.

True visualization happens, not perhaps when you are using it for a specific purpose like healing but if you are sitting and meditating, the visualization is shall we say - an opening of the third eye to the reality of spirit. Do you understand? Please, if you do not, - any of you - always question because whoever comes to you here, of my medi’s [medium’s] guides, we always are willing to be questioned and to elucidate if you do not understand an answer. Do not go away thinking that you did not understand but we will try our best to make you.

Question. Can you create your own reality in visualization.

It depends on the situation, you could not for instance visualize yourself within a bank vault removing the contents and do so, but certainly you can help by positive thinking to bring about situations which will assist you but not so much In a material manner. Certainly within your understanding you can create an environment which will advance your spiritual progression but you cannot by visualization change a particular physical situation.

Exorcism

Question. Good evening. A book was recently published and entitled ‘Possessed' which deals with the demonic possession of a child in the United States some years ago and the subsequent exorcism by a Jesuit priest in accordance with the rite of the Catholic church. They drive the spirit out and do not believe in engaging the spirit or the demon in conversation. What is the attitude of Spiritualism to this. [‘Possessed' by Thomas Allen - Published by Doubleday, July 1993 ].

Quite the opposite, there is very little point in merely removing a, well you say a demon, demonic possession, something of the dark we'll say. If you merely drive it out, then it finds another home, another place to go. The reason that we in the spirit world and those mediums that allow us to work with them in rescue try to establish the reason for the possession or the haunting or whatever it may be. Very often these beings are not what you would term demons or even evil, they are merely misguided, misunderstood and do not always realize the harm they are doing to the one they are possessing. We always aim to discover their reason for what they are doing and to try to show them a better way, that they are harming their host and perhaps distressing others around them. In almost every case this will succeed.

I would point out something which we say over and over and over again, that no being - no spirit being - whether it is of the darkness or of the light can possibly enter a human body unless the person possessing that body allows it to happen. Do you understand? It is when there are cases - as you say - of demonic possession, merely the case that the person possessed is weak in their will, in their spirit or they have allowed their self-control to be weakened by alcohol, by drugs, by loose living, by an attitude of not caring and sometimes by invoking the people of the spirit world in a sense of mockery and disbelief. Such people lay themselves open to the lower beings on this side of life, to those who are mischievous or of the darkness. They find a great opportunity to make their presence known, perhaps to enter the body of a weakling and to enjoy the pleasures - the questionable pleasures perhaps - that they left behind upon earth and then leave that body for its owner to take the consequences. But I say again, that if ever you are approached by something from the spirit world, which is questionable, which does not bring with it light, then all you have to do is not even bother about sending out waves of protection, just say, away, go, I do not wish your company. In the name of the God Spirit go, and my friends, whoever or whatever it is must leave you. You have the power to control yourselves and it is lack of control which allows entry to these beings.

I would say too, to those of you who may be aspiring mediums, you must always keep to a certain time or place initially, until both you and those who contact you have established a routine, so that they know when it will not be convenient to be with you. They may be with you but to make you aware of it. I have known people who have stopped in the middle of a meal and apparently allowed themselves to be controlled. This is not right and it is the kind of thing which leads to a medium no longer controlling when, where and how. Never forget this, remember you have a life to live upon earth as well as in the world of spirit.

Devas or Nature Spirits

Do you mean my brother, to become a physical being?

Yes.

No. The devas, the spirits who look after nature, the plants, the trees, the flowers, the small insects, they are separate beings. Do you understand? I do not mean that they cannot appear because many of them are formed in human shape but just as we are, they are not visible to all and sundry upon earth. You need the opening of the third eye in order to see them. Very rarely they will materialize and they are the origins of what many people call leprechauns, fairies, elves, goblins. Do you understand me?

Yes, but can they be born as human beings, can they come into the human race as such?

Well I suppose this is possible, they could if they wished but it is very doubtful that they would wish to do so. It is not perhaps - although man may believe it to be - the most enviable state to achieve. I think if man were more aware of the rest of creation, he would discover that many of the so-caned lower creatures, five much more fulfilled and happy lives than do men. For they accept, they are, attuned to the will of the God Spirit and do not seek to question, do not seek to set themselves up as gods as do so many among mankind. I know that this is something that many of you will have heard us say before but nevertheless I will repeat it. Man formed God, gave God an image, the image of man because man is so arrogant that he cannot imagine anything or any being more glorious than himself. But I tell you there are many planets inhabited by beings far superior to those of us upon earth and they do not bow down and worship God as one of themselves but praise and worship that being of light which is formless, which is pure mind, the cosmic mind which forms all created life.

God is not formed of man; cannot be seen but as light and that is why many of the ancient people because of their simplicity were perhaps nearer to understanding than we more complicated beings are today. Why those beings worshipped, many of them the sun because the sun is not a physical being itself but a symbol of the light of the Creator. Many of the ancient religions, the ancient ways of life, seem savage to you today but much was great, the simplicity of their lives brought them nearer to creation, nearer to understanding, nearer to manifesting as beings of light. It is said that much of their beliefs were superstition, perhaps so but much was symbolic and many of them had minds as keen and bright and' unclouded as your scientists today, who have forgotten their origins, forgotten the mysteries of life; they try to turn your very being into chemical symbols. They may be able to represent the physical matter which composes your body in such a manner but my friends I defy them to make a symbol which is spirit and I defy them to create spirit. Matter yes, spirit never.

Chairman: I am afraid I must reluctantly draw our meeting to a close.

Why my sister do you limit us to time? When you join us in the spirit world, we will continue without limits. [Laughter].

Epilogue

And now my friends I will close. I thank you my friends once again for your presence here, for your interest and for your questions and I will close with a prayer.

O Great Spirit of Life, You who are all divinity and all power, open yourself within the hearts of these Your children, let them recognize Your power and Your being. Let them to realize the reality of immortality, let them know that the Spirit of Divine Life, the symbol of Divine Life is as real today as it was at the beginning of time and at the moment of death one awakens into true life. Father may they be given understanding of Your truth, may the words that You have allowed me to speak become blessed, become understood, become reality within their minds and they and each and every one of them searching for truth, searching for understanding, giving love, giving truth, giving knowledge whenever and wherever they can and may their lives be blessed with Thy love and understanding. May they go on upon the pathway of development and make manifest Thy kingdom wherever they may be, may they journey safely along the pathway of truth, may they dwell in peace and in tranquillity and may they never fear the moment of passing.

May God be with you all and bless you, now and always, good night.
