Charles Lewin and Selina Carter

'To the Glory of God
A gift from Mr & Mrs C. Lewin'
Lilian’s father, Charles Lewin, had an established and flourishing hosiery manufacturing business in Mowsley End, Wigston which was started by his father.

Born on 2nd January 1853 in Wigston Magna, Charles was the eldest of six children born to Thomas Lewin of Ayleston and Caroline Langham of Wigston. He married Selina Carter, the daughter of Thomas Carter and Ann Robinson at Blaby Register office on 31st August 1880. Their daughter Edith was born in the December.

Charles was a well known local figure and a leading light in the Congregational Church. There is a stained glass window (pictured above) in the Independent Chapel in Wigston that was donated by him and his wife. The inscription reads : ‘To the glory of God – A gift from Mr and Mrs C. Lewin’

The Lewins had three more children : Charlie (1884), Lilian (1888) and Elsie Ann (1893). Elsie predeceased her parents dying in 1904 aged just 11 years. She shares a substantial grave with her parents in the Welford Road Cemetary in Wigston.

Selina also predeaceased Charles, dying on 7th February1912 from ‘caries of the sacrum’ which translates to decay and crumbling in the backbone, most likely caused by tumours. She was 51 years old.

It is clear that Charles was well off. He certainly paid for two of his grandsons’ education. When he died in 1929 he left substantial sums of money in his will, as indeed had his father Thomas before him. He died from ‘Hypostatic Pneumonia, hypostrophy of the prostrate gland, cystonomy’. This was a surgical procedure necessary for removing stones or tumours from bladder and for gaining access to the prostrate gland.

Summary of the will of Charles Lewin died 18 Feb 1929
