Samuel Robert Whitney born 19th July, 2007

When Sam was born, he had negligible blood sugar levels and was immediately whisked away to the intensive care unit where he was found to be suffering from Congenital Hyper Insulinism. CHI is a recessive genetic condition which effects about 1 in 30,000 new births.

After a couple of days, he was rushed away to Great Ormond Street Hospital where he stayed for 4 months. During this time, he was fed through a nasal tube and constantly monitored to ensure his blood sugar was maintained at safe levels. Failure to do this would have meant possible brain damage or even death.

Having had 95% of his pancreas removed, he is now back at home but is fed through a tube in his side and has to have regular injections to control his insulin output. Despite all this he is a remarkably cheery little boy and a joy to us all.
