Time to defend our freedoms
Earlier this year Jenny Tonge MP suggested that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel.  Well, it turns out that she was wrong – apparently it is the refuge of criminals.  I wonder how many of your readers have seen the astounding development surrounding war veteran George Staunton in Birmingham? He has been arrested and charged with ‘racially aggravated criminal damage’ for apparently painting two signs during the Euro elections which read “Don’t forget the 1945 war” and “Free speech for Britain”.  Birmingham may be a long way away from Richmond and Twickenham but how long will it be before the Euro thought police arrive here?  They won’t have far to go before they find evidence that our councilors are guilty of ‘racist’ crimes.  They will have to go no further than the Old Town Hall where an offensive plaque reads “restored after extensive damage caused by aerial attack in the Second World War”.  Of course we also have offensive War Memorials.  Presumably members of the council will be held responsible for allowing such criminal artifacts to despoil our environment.

For those who find this absurdity amazing, or even frightening, perhaps they ought to ask our local pro-European Union MPs just what they think about the Brussels proposals to introduce a new crime called xenophobia.  I am not joking.  Brussels is seriously proposing such a criminal offense along with their plans to abolish Common Law and introduce Corpus Juris.  This should go down nicely in Birmingham.

On September 10th the Democracy Movement will be holding its second public debate – this time on Freedom and the EU.  One of our speakers will be the leading expert on Corpus Juris and the threat it poses to our liberties.  Wear a poppy when you come – time is running out to defend our freedoms.

Sir,

Who is telling the truth about Europe

As Chairman at our public debate last week I was unable to voice any opinion on this vital issue so I would greatly appreciate being able so to do through your columns.

At the meeting Dr. Vincent Cable suggested that Bill Jamieson had been ‘selective’ when he gave us a number of quotations from European leaders.  Was he suggesting that these statements have, in some way, had not been made or are untruths?  There are dozens of examples of how Continental politicians openly state that the European Union’s final objective is the creation of a Federal Europe. For example: "Monetary Union is the motor of European integration" (Belgium’s Prime Minister); "The priority (is) to turn the EU into a single political state" (Joshka Fisher, Germany’s Foreign Minister);  "The Single Currency is the greatest abandonment of sovereignty since the foundation of the European Community … it is a decision of an essential political nature.  We need this United Europe.  We must never forget that the Euro is an instrument for this project" (Felipe Gonzalez, former Prime Minister of Spain).  Even our own politicians occasionally let the cat out of the bag; for example, "A single currency is about the politics of Europe.  It is about a Federal Europe by the back door" (John Major).  And so it goes on – and on.  Are the likes of Dr. Cable trying to tell us that these politicians are not telling us the truth?  The Europhiles are being disingenuous if this is their message.  I strongly believe that it is our politicians who are trying to hoodwink us by pretending that the Euro is a just a monetary matter.

At our local debate it was remarkable that Dr. Cable did not even mention that he was on the Government’s new committee formed to ‘prepare Britain for entry in EMU’.  Why the silence about what he and Labour are up to?  Is the truth too difficult for us to take?

I believe that our politicians are not telling us the truth about Europe – and have not done so for the last 25 years.  They pretend that black is white; that the Euro is a monetary issue when it is political; that us Eurosceptics are ‘Little Englanders’ when it is they who believe that our wonderful nation cannot stand on its own feet both economically and politically; that we are ‘anti-European’ when, to a man (and woman), we wish our friends in Europe every success with their enterprise – but without us; that somehow we are diehard xenophobes if we point out that our fishing and agricultural industries have been decimated by European dictats; and that our world class auction industry and the City are under immediate threat from Brussels and that our very laws are under threat from a politically motivated court.

Let me end by saying that it is all very well for the Dr Cables of this world to shake their heads, implying disbelief, when we mention the Social Chapter threat to people such as newspaper delivery boys.  The truth, like so much else about the European Union, is that these unpalatable facts exist – just as does the massive fraud machine which calls itself the European Commission.

The Richmond Branch of the Democracy Movement is just starting its campaign.  We are gaining excellent support from people locally of all political parties.  We expect our membership to grow exponentially as people realise the threat to their freedom posed by Brussels.  We will be campaigning locally for our nation’s sovereignty on the streets, in the meeting halls, and in the media …. and we will never, never surrender to the Great Lie which calls itself EMU which is another word for the United States of Europe, to be run by unelected, unaccountable and unsackable bureaucrats.

Yours faithfully,

Patriotism and the Europeans

Sir,

In view of Dr. Jenny Tonge's patronising letter today, I needs give this response as I am the person she vindictively branded a scoundrel at the 'Who is telling the truth?' open debate on the European Union. I am an aged grandma, one of the WW2 participants our MP professed in her letter to be so thankful to - when silent. Of course, it must be a disconcerting aggravation than an aged pensioner like me 'rising from the dead' so to speak, should bring up the subject of subversive anti-English propaganda. As I heard Dr. Tonge's doctrinal speil it brought home to everyone just how little respect she had for our traditional values. Because so many of us detect the change in many MP's attitude to the public, post war, we recognise that the Democracy Movement is providing an invaluable face-to-face platform. Does it not say something about the lack of present day democracy that we have to rely on a benefactor to give us a public meeting with an MP? When I was a young girl, King George VI expressed his gratitude to me for my patriotism - a gesture of far greater esteem for its sincerity than any insulting trite party patter. While I am able, it is my duty to keep the faith and speak out against false representation and corruption.

Vida Hastings, Bracken Gardens, Barnes

Sir,

I applaud Christopher Mowbray's call for a full debate on the EU. I too attended the Democracy Movement's Euro meeting, hoping to hear an honest and informed discussion. Bill Jamieson and Marc Seddon summarised the economic and constitutional objections to adopting the Euro. However Jenny Tonge and Vincent Cable were unable to refute these arguments, or to provide any coherent rationale for adopting the Euro. Instead they resorted to meaningless pro-EU dogma such as "we need to be at the heart of Europe". Jenny Tonge accuses 'the English' of lacking confidence. On the contrary I believe the British nation has confidence in its ability to govern itself and compete globally. A confident nation does not allow itself to be absorbed into a European superstate claiming that "we're too small to survive on our own". Dr. Tonge's rationale for European integration is the avoidance of war in Europe. Do we need to surrender control of our government and economy to achieve this? Post war peace is being preserved by NATO and the increasing economic interdependence resulting from liberalisation/globalisation of trade. Adopting the Euro will herald the irrevocable termination of our status as an independent democracy. The Euro is neither desirable nor inevitable. We need to exercise our democratic rights and challenge our politicians, while we still can!

Alistair Edwards, Heathfield South, Twickenham

Sir,

In regard to Dr. Tonge's letter 'Blind patriotism and the anti-Europeans'. Patriotism is defined as one's service and love for their country. Germany's patriots did not show much for their country during both World wars and who could blame them? When in the First World War they had the upcoming tyrant Adolf who invented the Holocaust in the Second World War. Do we in this country want to be ruled by German for 50 years or so? Because that is going to happen should Tony Blair throw away or give away our democracy. England was railroaded into the Common Market in the middle of the 1950s by that buffoon sailor Ted. The same thing will happen if Tony Blair wriggles his way out of giving the people of this country a referendum for going in for Euro monetarism. I don't see why Dr. Tonge and her leader Paddy should cosset the Labour Party in bankrolling England into Europe. What happens if we have a recession in four or five years time and Tony Blair has put his size ten shoes over the German border? Was Dr. Tonge addressing an audience of school children at the Movement for Democracy? She mentioned in her letter last week that the meeting she addressed was depressing and attended by narrow minded and prejudiced audience. Dr. Tonge should hold on to her patriotism and tell her leader for now and the next leader to make it quite clear to Tony Blair that the people of England want to keep our pound coin and our democracy.

Support grows for the anti-Euros (Surrey Comet 19/2/99)

Two brave MPs entered the lions' den to defend the Euro in front of 300 anti-European supporters in Richinond. Vincent Cable, MP for TwIckenham, and Jenny Tonge, MP for Richmond Park, were invited to speak at the anti-European Democracy Movement's first public meeting in the borough. The open debate held at Queen Charlotte Hall last week drew plenty of attention and the audience's staunch opposition to the European Single Currency surprised the MPs.

Dr Tonge said: "The audience there was not typical of the reaction I am getting from the majority of people I talk to about Europe, most of whom now want to see Britain join the-Euro as soon as possible." But both MPs welcomed the Democracy Movement's initiative to hear all sides of the argument. Mr- Cable; who was chief economist for Shell before becoming an MP said, "I very much welcomed an opportunity to about Europe and the Euro which is perhaps the biggest issue the country faces. "I didn't mind the Barracking. But I felt the organisers were pretty propagandist in their opposition to Europe". "I believe we should have a referendum as soon as possible in order to reduce uncertainty and help businesses to plan ahead".

But speakers from all sides attacked the major political parties for their double talk on European integration. The meeting was closed by the chairman, Christopher Mowbray, the new head of the Democracy Movement which has just set up in Richmond. Mr. Mowbray said, "The turn out was remarkable. I would say almost 70% of the audience was against a federal Europe". We think it’s important to hold open debates on Europe so that both sides of the argument can be heard. In Richmond there is growing support for our cause. We need to inform people so they know the dangers if Britain joins the Euro". In the run-up to the meeting, the Richmond branch which is planning further debates collected around 200 signatures for their anti-Europe petition and raised nearly £900 to raise awareness in the borough.

DM Richmond:I love this whinging. What a rotten loser Dr Cable is. As Chairman I both organised and chaired the meeting during which I made no comments. The Europhiles have a losy case and can't take it when they are shown up. This was my reply to Dr Cable and the Comet:

To Vincent Cable e-mails dated 19/2/99

I suppose you are all delighted that today we have all been advised that millions of pounds will be spent on promoting EMU by New Labour, presumably with your support. I am amazed, in the light of this announcement, that Dr. Cable did not mention this in his speech. So much for open and honest government - no doubt this TRUTH was too unpalatable for any audience.

+++

Dear Dr. Cable

I am astounded to read in today's Richmond Comet that the open debate's oragnisers were 'pretty propagandist'. I arranged the meeting and it was specifically set up to provide a level playing field for both pro and anti EMU speakers. As the Chairman of the meeting I made every endeavour to ensure that each speaker was given a fair hearing. As the Chairman of the local Democracy Movement I pointed out that we are a cross party pressure group - open to all. That the meeting was attended by an audience which was

largely anti Federal Europe was just the way the cookie crumbles. Your office asked for 6 copies of our fly sheet about the meeting - Jenny Tonge asked for a similar number. Perhaps, had the pro Federalist camp made a little more effort to inform your supporters, then there would have been more in sympathy with your support for the undemocratic institutions of the EU.

UKIP requested a presence at our meeting which we happily agreed to. We also invited the Conservatives to have a place if they so wanted. That they did not even bother to reply probably means that they too do not really want a true and open debate about Europe - so the task falls to us in the Democracy Movement to tell people about what is going on - and indeed to offer people of your persuasion to have their say as well. That is something not on offer from Brussels who spend up to £300 million per annum on propaganda - including indoctrination of our 8 to 12 year olds with the illegal Eurobus which is visiting schools throughout Britain. I trust that they will not be allowed in Richmond or Twickenham

That you chose to totally ignored speaking about the Government's plans, presumably supported by the LibDem, to now spend millions of tax payers money on pro EMU propaganda speaks volumes for your idea of open democracy and the TRUTH.

Jenny Tonge's assertion that the majority of people want Britain to join the Euro is at best optimistic, at worst totally disingenuous.

I suggest that you will find that she is wrong when we are next given the opportunity to speak at the ballot box. f course the MEP elections have been rigged so that we cannot even establish for whom we will vote - let alone their view on the EU and EMU.
