Bassenthwaite and its
surroundings
Artists, writers and poets
have been visiting the Lake District for centuries, taking advantage
of the breathtaking views and quiet locations. Bassenthwaite is
one of the least visited and quietest areas of the Lake District, it
comes as no surprise that England's only osprey nesting site is situated
less than a mile from the Ravenstone Hotel. There are views around every
corner waiting to be painted with Skidaw at 3054ft making an impressive
backdrop to Bassenthwaite Lake and also to the hotel. Four miles to
the south east is the busy market town of Keswick on the shores of Derwent
Water. Keswick was once the home of the Cumberland Pencil Company but
sadly only the pencil museum remains. From the shores of the lake there
are fantastic views of Derwent Fells, Cats Bells and Crag Hill. Further
to the south is Buttermere and Crummock Water both havens for artists.
