The Sultan’s Gift

In 1599 Elizabeth I sent the Sultan of Turkey a magnificent present, part organ and part astronomical clock. Its mechanism proved so complicated that its maker, John Dallam, was sent to Constantinople to supervise its installation. He wrote an account of his adventures, and this piece is based on it. seen through the eyes of his young apprentice.

There are two acts, each of 40 minutes. The piece is presented as a series of children’s games, as an equivalent to the sinister games of adulthood. It is for a large cast of young singers. Some of the parts can be taken by adult voices. It is scored for a large orchestral group.

It would be difficult to present the whole book here. As a ‘taster’, here is the Ambassador’s Trio from the end of Act One, in which they explain the background to the mission.

AMBASSADORS' TRIO

The three ambassadors cluster anxiously round Dallam.

Ambassador I
Her Majesty's latest and greatest command
Is to search through the length and the breadth of the land
To find out a wonder, a rare piece of work
To send, as a friend____
To her ally the Turk!

Ambassador II
The Sultan is master of riches untold
It might prove disaster to offer him gold
And so we decided the gift we should seek:
Ambassador IIICostly
Ambassador I But tasteful
Ambassador II And truly unique!

All (a round)
Her Majesty's latest and greatest command
Is to search through the length and the breadth of the land
To find out a wonder, a rare piece of work
A present for the Sultan; a gift for the Turk!

Ambassador III
We thought and we sought what the Turk might enjoy
- A mechanical swan or an optical toy -
And then we thought we would put to the test
Whether music hath charms____
For the savagest breast!,

Ambassador I
But no one could tell what the Turk might admire
- A Whitechapel Bell or the Chapel Royal Choir -
The Queen's in a rage now and we are disgraced
Because we can't gauge___
The state of his taste!

All
Her Majesty's latest &c.
A present for the Sultan; a gift for the Turk!

Ambassador II
The Queen's in a fury: her temper is short
We daily expect to be banished from Court
And what is worse we expect at each hour
A tap on the shoulder____
off to the Tower!

Ambassador III
And that's all the thanks we expect for our pains
We furrowed our foreheads; we cudgelled our brains
And we were despairing of what we should do
And then - inspiration!_____

All
WE THOUGHT OF YOU

(a round) So help us, Robert Dallam
