These pages, from documents of the period, give information about the British Military Command’s restoration and reopening of the Teatro di San Carlo, Napoli in September 1943, and of the performances there during 1944 and 1945.

The Teatro di San Carlo’s web site notes these events, which will surely be amplified in its projected Teatro di San Carlo Archives and Historical Museum:
«Sostanzialmente risparmiato, pur se danneggiato in alcune strutture dagli eventi bellici, il San Carlo venne requisito dalle autorità militari inglesi nell’ottobre del 1943. Gli spettacoli ripresero il 26 dicembre di quell’anno, destinati alle truppe alleate. I civili potevano accedervi, ma soltanto in galleria e in loggione. L’occuppazione durò sino al 1946.» («Substantially spared, though damaged in some parts of the structure by the events of war, the San Carlo was requisitioned by the English military authorities during October 1943. Performances recommenced on the 26 December that year, intended for the allied troops. The civilian population was admitted, but only to the gallery and loggia. The occupation lasted until 1946.»)
