W elcome to The Ashleys of Chitterne Website which is designed to seek and provide information concerning family members, past and present. My name is Peter Norman Ashley and, as far as I know, I am the only member of this branch of the Ashleys to attempt a family history. As a result of research carried out in the past 30 years I now hold a substantial database of names and events which I would gladly share with interested parties.

W here is Chitterne?

C hitterne is a small, remote village situated on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, England, about nine miles from Warminster. It has its own website and this is well worth a visit.

W ho are The Ashleys of Chitterne?

W e are all descended from William Aishley (the name changed to Ashley in about 1800) who was born C1776 and married an Elizabeth Hart in Chitterne in 1797. The couple had eleven children and descendants were still living in the village in the 20th Century, most of them agricultural labourers. The last Ashley to reside in Chitterne died in 1986 and the family is now widely dispersed, with known representatives in Wiltshire, Bristol, Somerset, Cornwall, Sussex, Devon, the Midlands, the North of England, Canada and New Zealand.
