Welcome to homegrownguitars (formerly CEW
Guitars) –unique musical instruments hand
made in Cumbria, England.
Looking
for something a bit different?
Or just tired of characterless mass produced guitars that
look and sound alike?
If
so, browse through my pages and see what I have to
offer.
Specialities
Although I do make
"normal" full sized guitars I specialise in :
- Travel guitars (electric and acoustic)
- Cigar Box guitars
- Various stringed instruments using the humble
biscuit/cookie tin as the soundbox
- One-off unusual instruments such as electric mandolins,
ukuleles, nylon string electric guitars, fretless basses etc
Although I mainly use conventional materials for full
sized instruments, whenever possible I use
recycled/scrap/"found" materials for everything else. This does not detract
from their playability, and all my instruments should have
proper intonation and work at least as well as a mass
produced one. I usually finish my instruments with a hand
applied oil or melamine lacquer finish. So although they may lack
the gloss of a factory made instrument, they are reasonably
protected and the wood still looks like wood rather than plastic.
Unlike mass producers, I'm prepared to spend a lot of time with
the things that matter such as tidying fret ends using a needle file
and lots of fine grade wet and dry paper, and all the other little
things that usually need doing to a guitar to make it properly
playable when you get it out of
it's box.
About
me
I'm Colin Webb. I'm a semi
retired teacher living in the North of England. Homegrown
Guitars is my hobby/obsession. I began by making guitars for
my son (who unlike me, is an excellent guitarist), and his musical
friends.
As the "bug" bit I started
to make them for fun and decided to sell them when my better half
began to complain about the house being cluttered up with
guitars.
