Stolen Shetland harness, bridles and carriage
parts
Stolen from Chipperfield, Hertfordshire on
23/24 October 2002 :
The pole and shafts to a Bennington Mini
carriage, a double Shetland Tedex Webbing Harness, a single Shetland brown
leather harness and 6 bridles (2 Shetland, 2 pony and 2 cob).
The pole and shafts are black with silver
fittings as is the Tedex harness. Both parts of the double harness were in
bags supplied by Tedex with their trademark on the front. I had also
marked the bags with the names of my ponies in silver marker pen these are
"Orchid" and "Patch". Both parts of the harness are
also marked with small 'O' and 'P' - this was to make it easier for me to
identify which part went on which of my Shetlands.
The police said that this tack might turn
up in the Oxfordshire area, as this is where they have found other items
of stolen tack from the Hertfordshire area in the past. But please if
anyone is offered my harness for sale please contact me. I have contacted
Bennington and I am the only person they have sold a double Shetland Tedex
harness to, as far as they can remember.

Stalks the Equestrian Classified Ads on the Internet
Fraudsters are scanning
"for sale" columns in newspapers and the Internet to look for
items for sale so that they can con the vendor into cashing cheques that
have been stolen or copied.
In recent months numerous
incidents of attempted fraud have been reported to the police nationally and
also some in
South Yorkshire
. Members of the public are warned to be vigilant.
The scenario is that the
fraudsters target people who advertise items for sale through the press or
the Internet, usually for higher value items such as computers and motor
vehicles, but also for horses and saddles.
Contact is then made by the
fraudsters stating that they want to purchase the item and offering to send
a cheque or get their business partner or creditors to send a cheque for
more than the asking price. They then ask that the cheque be cashed and that
the goods are then sent with the rest of the money via their courier who
will come and pick it up. Variations are that the balance of the money
should be paid by money transfer usually to
Nigeria
, or in the case of horses, the balance be given to the shipping agent who
arrives to collect the animal.
The cheque sent in the post to
cover the cost of the item is likely to be stolen or a forgery but may well
be cleared by the bank initially. Some time later when it is revealed that
the cheque is not genuine, payment will be stopped and the seller will not
only loose their goods but the balance as well.
Det Con Damian Chapman of the
South Yorkshire Police Cheque Fraud Squad told of one case which involved a
car which was advertised at between £4,000 and £5,000 and a cheque for £9,000
was offered by someone from
West Africa
. Another involved valuable computer goods. Luckily neither of the vendors
fell for the scam.
Equine Liaison Officer, Mrs
Joanne Kennedy, states she has received information from an Internet site
which advertises horses for sale, saying that this con is being used
regarding horse sales and some people have already lost both money and
horse.
The scam has also been used in
relation to the purchase of a saddle, where a British cheque was used, and
upon special presentation by the bank on the seller's request the cheque was
found to be a poor copy.
DC Chapman
added: "Be warned if you advertise any item for sale and the would be
purchaser offers a cheque over and above the value of the item, don’t fall
for it - you are probably going to be a victim of fraud."
