Gnasher
The Log of the building of Gnasher in reverse order :-

July 1998 We have ignition. All systems checked and ready to go. For the viewing on the 19th July we will make a plywood shell, this will be replaced by Kevlar once it has cured. We are still waiting for the Jaw hydraulics. |
|
June 1998 The circuit for the Linear Actuator is built. It is based on 2 Ken Hewitt cct's driving 16A relays. Thanks Ken. |

June 1998 The Linear Actuator for the steering is fitted. |

June 1998 The bottom jaw is fabricated from steel plate. Should give a nasty nip if nothing else ! |
![]() |
June 1998 The rolling chassis is complete. We can now finalise the position of the engine and gearbox. The next stage is to get Gnasher powered up !! |
![]() |
June 1998 The back axle with wheels attached. Saw blades will be added to protect the wheels from side impact. |

May 1998 A linear servo. The gearbox needs a large force to move the selection lever. Also it kicks out of gear during operation, this is eliminated with the screw thread. The slide pot. gives proportional control i.e. let go of the stick and the robot should stop. |

May 1998 We have hit a snag, the total weight of the parts is 72 kg ! This only leaves us 7 Kg for the chassis, body and jaws. Big Problem. Something has to go. It has been decided to use a smaller cylinder on the jaws and drop the hydraulic steering. We needed that when we were planning to use 4WD with solid Diffs. Now that we have trolley wheels on the front and a Diff. at the back, it is felt that a Linear Actuator will be strong enough to steer the robot. |

May 1998 The Diff. has arrived, we can now layout the main parts on the bench. This will help us to determine the overall dimensions etc. The Diff has now gone away to have the wheels keyed to it. |

April 1998 Front wheels - 8" steel/rubber - indestructible Rear wheels - 14" alloy/pneumatic - for grip. |

March 1998 The rams and solenoid valves for the steering. |

1998 The 5 H.p. OHV Engine and Hydrostatic Gearbox. |

1998 A second weapon, a Hydraulic Power-Pack and choice of cylinder (2,5 - 50 ton pull). |

December
1997 Our first weapon, a 23 " chainsaw, Heavy but it would be a shame not to use it. |
