34th (Army) Tank Brigade

UK, 1st December 1941 - 7th June 1942
173 North Irish Horse
174 147 RAC (10th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regt.)
174 153 RAC (8th Btn. Essex Regt.)

Notes:

1. Brigade created 1/12/1941.

2. NIH receive churchills in February 1942.

3. Arm of service colours unknown. Possibly green, P. Gudgin's comments in "With Churchills to War", albeit for 21 Tank Brigade, gives brown with white bar underneath. There is a photo from this period showing NIH churchill being entrained spporting what appears to be a two colour split flash (no bar).

UK, 8th June 1942 - 2nd Sept 1942

1st Mixed Division

North Irish Horse
147 RAC (10th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regt.)
153 RAC (8th Btn. Essex Regt.)

Notes:

1. These marking may although theoretically correct may have never been applied to the vehicles of the North Irish Horse as it was known that it would soon be leaving the Brigade and from July 42 onwards control by the Brigade had effectively ceased.

UK, 3rd September 1942 - 10th September 1943

43rd Mixed Division

147 RAC (10th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regt.)
151 RAC (10th Btn. King's Own Royal Regt. Lancaster)
153 RAC (8th Btn. Essex Regt.)

Notes:

1. Photo on Pg.49 of Mr Churchill's Tank (wrongly accredited) - should be 151 RAC

? 147 RAC (10th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regt.)
? 151 RAC (10th Btn. King's Own Royal Regt. Lancaster)
? 153 RAC (8th Btn. Essex Regt.)

Notes:

1. 30th December 1943 151 RAC amalgamates with 107 RAC and becomes 107 RAC (the more senior regt.)

2. Arm of service background - green with white bar ?

107 RAC (5th Btn. King's Own Royal Regt. Lancaster)
153 RAC (8th Btn. Essex Regt.)
? 7 RTR
? 9 RTR

Notes:

1. 107 RAC '157' serial is out of precedance order as senior Regt. they should theroetically have taken the 156 serial. What I assume has happend here is that following amalgamation with 151 RAC, 107 RAC keeps 151 RAC's original serial.

2. 153 RAC disbanded 24th August 1944. C squadron 107 RAC formed from men from the disbanded 153RAC - source :"Tank Twins"

3. 7 RTR joins Brigade 17/10/44, Tank Tracks says 19/8/44, Detached 1/10/44 to Siege of Dunkirk - stays 4 months. Hodges & Taylor gives serial 158 replacing 153 RAC.

4. 9 RTR Joins Brigade 4/9/44. Jean Bouchery (The British Soldier, Part 2) - gives serial 158 - replacing 153 RAC

107 RAC(5th Btn. King's Own Royal Regt. Lancaster)
147 RAC (10th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regt.)

Notes:

1. On conversion to an Armoured Brigade (and consequent change of Arm of Service) the serials now reflect the regiment's seniority.

Please note that I cannot claim this article to be definitive and it very much represents work in progress and so may be subject to change. Where applicable I have given precedence to 'first' hand accounts over those from the insignia reference books (which in any case are often contradictory with respect to Army Tank Brigades). Any comments and corrections are most welcome, especially if backed up with photographic references, or form first hand recollections etc.
