SOME USEFUL LINKS FOR YOUR FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCHGENEALOGY This site belongs to the Church of Later Day Saints and contains lots of general information regarding family history research. In addition there are also several searchable databases. As this is an American site some of the information will not be of use to anyone researching UK ancestors, however the site does have the 1881 UK Census, which is very useful and also the International Genealogical Database (IGI), another very useful database. An ongoing project undertaken by volunteers to transcribe the Birth, Marriage and Death Indices. Although as yet not complete there is a vast amount of data already accessible. The site has an easy to use searchable database, which is free to search, hence the site name. There is a run down of the data already transcribed for each year, so if you are searching for an event in a particular year check first to see how much data there is for that year. The site seems to be updated on a monthly basis, so if you can't find what you are looking for you might find it next month! One other thing I might mention, if you have some free time and would like to get involved why not volunteer to do some transcribing yourself? This, as the name suggests, is the site where you can search for relatives that were alive in 1901. You can do a name search free, however if you require all the information pertaining to a household there is a charge of about 50p. If you pay by credit card there is a minimum session charge of £5.00 and you can only access the session for 48 hours, so make sure you can spend at least your £5.00. Another alternative however is to purchase a census voucher. These can be obtained from many libraries, they cost £5.00 also but they are valid for 6 months, and you can spend them 50p at a time if you wish. This expanding website has all the Birth, Marriage and Death indices from 1837 onwards, plus census, parish and other records. You can search for records free, but again as with the 1901 Census, to gain access to the records you have to pay. The minimum cost is £6.95 which buys you 60 units which are valid for 90 days, another option is to take out one of the subscriptions on offer. ANCESTRY BMD INDEX SEARCH (FREE) Ancestry is probably the best known site for genealogy research. Unfortunately you can only access some features if you subscribe, which is quite expensive. However, the link above will take you to the FREE searchable Birth, Marriage and Death indices. However, unlike Find My Past access to the records here is also FREE. So get searching.
