This started as a conversation between two people. One was a Christadelphian and the other was a leader in the local community.

The community leader said:

"You know we have tried so many different ways to address the problems in our local community and failed. All that we do seems to fall apart. We attempt to do our best but it goes wrong at every turn. Look at the place of work and the increasing pressures that we are all under. Look at our home lives, with so many domestic problems these days. Look at our society generally, and the way in which we seem to have lost so many of its values.

I work in our local community and you know despite all our endeavours there remain some really deep seated problems. All our endeavour just seems to be a sticking plaster over a very deep incurable wound. Society I think is basically sick whichever way you look at it. Crime is increasing, so is the number of suicides. The use of drugs is reaching epidemic proportions as people attempt to escape from their problems. Like I say, family problems are on the increase and then just look at the number of homeless people that there are. There are problems everywhere you turn."

The Christadelphian answered.

"Well that's what we'd expect actually. I know it sounds a bit trite but the answers are all there in God's word, the Bible. Firstly there is a principle laid down throughout the whole of the Bible of sin and death. Now of course sin is a word not very widely used to day, but what it basically means is to disobey God's commandments. And in a way that describes human nature because we all want to do our own thing. However the Bible is quite clear that if we continue along this route things will get worse and worse and mankind will sink into deeper and deeper depravity.

Another thing is that this actually was foretold in the Bible by Jesus himself. He said that the time would come when it was going to be just the same as in the days of Noah and at that time Jesus would return to the Earth and set up God's promised kingdom. Now the days of Noah were characterised by men following their own instincts and doing just as they pleased, just like to day. What we had then and now is a lawless and Godless society.

The only solution to all of these problems we believe is the return of Jesus to set up God's kingdom on the Earth. Of course we don't know exactly when this will be, but we do believe from the signs around us that it will be soon. In the meantime we have a clear solution outlined for us which requires an individual response. We must look into the pages of the Bible and learn about God and His purpose. Ultimately this brings us to a belief in God and Jesus his son and then all the answers to these terrible problems are laid out in front of us. Not that the Bible promises instant solutions, or that these problems will not touch us. We will however be better equipped I guess you would say to cope with them and to understand why they are happening. God has given us some very practical tools to help us live our lives. Firstly a knowledge of His plan and purpose with this Earth and mankind upon it through the bible. Secondly, an example of how to live Godly lives as followers of our Lord Jesus. Thirdly, the wonderful comfort of prayer which is the way provided of bringing our problems to God.

So yes, as you said at the beginning these things are a real cause for concern, but in another way they are actually an assurance that God is still working out His plan and purpose with the Earth. What's more, whilst there is still time, we have an invitation from God to do something about it."
