My Tiger Moth registration DX644, was the 732nd to be manufactured in Sydney Australia, November 1941.The RAF(UK) order stated that it was to be despatched to Mount Hampden, Southern Rhodesia for Pilot training duties.
In April of 1942 DX644 arrived in Mount Hampden and undertook 3000 hours of flying training operations until it was sold from the military in 1946. Subsequently it was purchased by a syndicate based in Salisbury and set to work towing gliders in to the air at the local gliding club, as VP-YDC. These duties continued until 1972, the aircraft was then put in to storage until the-mid 1980's. It was relocated to "The Aircraft Refurbishment Company"; a Tiger Moth specialist, who are based at Rand Airport Johannesburg. The aircraft was restored to as new condition by February 1989 and flew from Rand Airport, as ZS-LUE, until 1993. In early 1996 it was shipped to Australia. I purchased ZS-LUE, now registered VH-WHW, on the East Coast of Australia in 1996. I flew it across the continent to its' new home near Perth, Jandakot Airport, Western Australia, from where it has flown more than 1100 charter flights in the past 2 years, with a despatch reliability (excluding weather) of 100%. The total distance travelled on charter operations in the last two years equates to more than twice around the world! |
