All
Saints Church, the scene of a Civil War
slaughter. |
|
Crondall was used by
both the Royalist and Cromwellian Armies at some point during the English
Civil War. The local battles between the two Armies led to many soldiers
being forced to fight and flee into the surrounding villages,
Crookham being a preferred refuge.
Cromwell's army, under the command of Waller,
stayed in and around Crondall when laying siege to Basing House for 3
years.
Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Public House "The
Plume of Feathers" in the village whilst
visiting his troops during
this period, while his men lived in the surrounding
fields in tents.
His army became the Parliamentary
Party, which were the forefathers of today's Labour
Party.
