The threat & worry of an invasion from across the Channel by German troops in the early part of the World War 2 was very real.

the Basingstoke Canal.

This resulted in various schemes to delay or even defeat the enemy in it's attempt to advance on London, expecting it to have landed somewhere along the South Coast. A line of anti-tank emplacements was constructed across Southern England in 1940, from Sheerness to Bristol, as a second line of defence to disrupt the advance of the German Army, had they invaded as were expected.

This line of "Dragons Teeth" passes through the village, and along with the "Pillbox" defences which can be found in numbers at strategic military advantage points about the village. They are notably at the top of Beacon Hill Road and along the Basingstoke Canal, meaning that in the 1940's, Church Crookham could have experienced some of the most bloodiest  battles fought on English soil for hundreds of years.

To have lost this battle was considered by many to have been the beginning of the end.
Fortunately, due to events elsewhere, this battle was never started.
