| The outbreak of war in 1914 led to a large increase
in the size of the local
population.
The building of Crookham Camp in Sandy Lane,
became the home of the Royal Army Medical Corps, the Royal Military Police
patrolling the streets, and with a billeted soldier in almost every spare room in the village, helped make
Church Crookham the liveliest it has ever been.
Many
thousands of men marched from Church Crookham to the railway
station in Fleet, only to survive a few hours upon arrival at
"The
Front".
A
large area of Church Crookham off the Bourley Road was
developed into a Transit / training camp. A number of
the large, flat concrete bases which were used for the
tented accommodation, still remain today. |
