| The area of
the Haig Road housing estate in Church Crookham (off Aldershot Road), is so named as it was
built on land which once housed Army billets, built
originally to accommodate an Army Officer Cadet Training
Battalion, at the beginning of The First World
War. and was referred to as the Haig Lines, named after
General Haig.
In
1918 when war was over, the Army de-mobbed
and left, leaving the local folk waiting for men who would
not return from The Front.
Virtually every family
from Church Crookham was effected, and despite peace
time celebrations, the village was a somber place for
many years to come. |
