Church Crookham used to boast it's own sports facilities at the
Peter Driver Center, in Bourley Road. Once a formidable army
gymnasium, the building was obtained by the Council with the
intention of promoting sport and exercise for all from the local
area. It was renamed, in honor of a local hero, Mr. Peter Driver, a
Gold medallist in the 6 mile race, at the 1954 Vancouver Commonwealth Games. Mr. Driver was also
a Founder member of the
"Fleet and Crookham Athletic Club".
The
center later became more distanced from the world of sport, and
became a night club which burnt down one night. The remnants of
which continue to be an embarrassing, disgraceful eyesore for all
to see. See
our Local Eyesore...
There
are a couple of full sized and outside 5-a-side (floodlit)
football pitches still used at this location |
