OUR TRAVELS:
We both enjoy traveling and have, either together or individually, visited all of the major continents. Originally staying relatively close to home with trips around much of Europe and the Mediterranean we have, since Clive retired in 1993, extended this to long haul, exotic destinations. These cover Clive’s interest in geographical and historical sights such as The Pyramids, The Nile and Luxor in Egypt; Great Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe; Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu in Peru; Uxmal and Chichen Itza, Mexico; The Grand Canyon, U.S.A; Niagara Falls, Canada; Uluru [Ayres Rock] and the vast Nullabor plain in Australia; The Kremlin, Russia; Samarkand, Uzbekistan; Taj Mahal, India and The Turfan Depression, Great Wall and Forbiden City in China. Cherie’s interests are more towards nature and unusual locations which include the Masai Mara Safari Park, Kenya; The Gambia; Cuba, the spice island of Zanzibar and the Orang Utans in Borneo.

2000 - Canada. Turkey: During March Clive flew to Canada to embark on another trans continental trip he had long wanted to make. First stop was Toronto and a visit to Niagara Falls then a train journey by 'The Canadian' across the continent via Winnipeg and Edmonton to Jasper in the Rocky Mountains. After a few days visiting the local sites and trying his hand at driving a dog sledge with a team of eight huskies he rejoined the train to Vancouver and a trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island before flying home via Chicago. A few weeks later, in June, Cherie flew out, after a lapse of 10 years, to revisit Marmaris in Turkey, generally for a holiday lazing in the sun but with a few excursions into the surrounding countryside.
2003 - Cuba: In late September Cherie flew off to Cuba for two weeks in the sun in La Habana [Havana] and Varadero - Matanzas while Clive stayed at home to look after the cats and play bowls - a total of 81 competitive games during the summer season.

2004 - Kenya & Zanzibar: At the end of May Cherie was off again to Africa, this time to Nairobi in Kenya and a safari into the Masai Mara Nature Reserve renowned for the numbers and diversity of its game. Early morning drives to view lions, leopards, elephants, hippopotamus, crocodiles, giraffes, buffalo and various antelope. A week later she flew out to the spice island of Zanziber in the Indian Ocean for some quiet relaxation on the beach.
2005 - Tunisia: Mid June and Cherie flew out again to Africa, this time to Hammamett on the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia. Although most of the time was spent relaxing in the sun she also visited the ruins of Carthage and embarked on a four day safari - visiting the Roman ruins at El Djem and the Troglodyte cave dwellings at Metmata before heading out via Douz into the sand dunes of the Sahara desert. After crossing the Chott El Jerid salt lake to Tozeur she stopped at the oases of Chebika and Tamerza before returning via the Holy City of Kairouan.
OUR EARLY TRAVELS:
Clive's first 'trip' abroad was in 1953 when, as part of his National Service in the RAF, he was posted for twenty-one months to Kasfareet, alongside the Suez Canal in Egypt. From there, in 1954, he spent two weeks in Famagusta, Cyprus at a 'leave camp', visiting the Roman ruins at Salamis and the mountain top castle of St Hilarion. In 1962 he was a member of the dance and song group from Chichester that represented England at the International Folk Festival in the 'Sound of Music' town of Salzburg, Austria and later that year went with the group to another festival, in Schoten, Belgium. This was followed by appearances at two further festivals in Belgium during 1964 at Antwerp and Yvoir. During 1966 he drove across Europe visiting Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Italy, Venice, Yugoslavia, and Austria then toured again in 1971 via Belgium, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria to Greece - visiting Troy, Pergamon and Ephesus. Late in 1972 he flew to Tunisia where he explored the ancient ruins of Carthage and the Roman towns of Dougga and Thuburbo Majus but in 1973 was back driving across Europe, this time to Italy, where he visited Pisa, Rome and Pompeii. The following year, 1974, he was at Bad Harzburg in Germany as song tutor at a folk course and during 1976 and 77 made several visits to the historical university towns of Heidelberg and Tubingen, including singing at the Tubingen 1977 folk festival. In 1978 he was still holidaying in Southern Germany, in Stuttgart, but in 1979 sailed across to Oslo in Norway to visit his friend the folk singer and fiddle player Duncan Wood. Later that year and again in 1980 he was singing at folk clubs in Aahus and Copenhagen, Denmark. 1981 saw him touring and singing with two friends at folk clubs in Heidelberg and he also went on holiday to Interlaken in Switzerland. In 1986 was with a folk group from Heathfield in Sussex on an exchange visit to perform in Tauberbischofsheim in Germany.
Whilst Clive's holidays involved either sightseeing or singing Cherie's were more relaxing. She was, and still is, interested in trying local foods, meeting the inhabitants and taking things easy in the sun. Her first trip abroad was in 1972 when she went to Greece followed in 1974 by a visit to Sicily. Staying in the Mediterranean her next holiday was to Malta in 1978 and Italy the following year [1979]. After that she visited Corfu in 1981 and Crete in 1982 Then for three years, 1983, 84 and 85, she visited Morocco followed in 1986 with a trip to Cyprus and then a return to Morocco in 1987 After moving to Brighton she visited Turkey in the summer on 1988
Following on after these individual holidays came a series of trips where Cherie and Clive visited Cherie's daughter Tracie, then living in Germany. In 1989, 90 and 91 they were in West Berlin. The first visit included a trip, via Checkpoint Charlie, to East Berlin, the second coincided with the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and by the third visit the 'Wall' had gone and they were able to stroll through a re-united city. The next three Christmases were spent in Germany - in 1992 in Osnabruck and both 1993 and 94 in Guttersloh.

Whilst there she visited the UNESCO World Heritage Kinabalu National Park at the foot of Mount Kinabalu - one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world - and also spent a day at the Sepilok Orang Utan centre.
