Match Report
Edinburgh Tournament '05
1st December 2002
Arriving in the early evening, Sandwich began with their normal pre-tournament regime of getting
the beers in and 'dancing' to some seriously cheesy music. Having a former resident in the
team meant there was no danger of getting lost walking round the corner to the Grass Market.
Pool Match 1:- Sandwich: 3 Nottingham University 2: 2
With the previous night's preparations executed to their usual standards of near perfection,
Sandwich arrived for their first game with their minds and bodies in that state typically
uttered in hushed tones (ie a bit hungover and hoarse). Early goals settled Sandwich, who
looked comfortable until a late Nottingham goal to bring the score to 3 - 2 caused some anxious
moments in the dying minutes.
Pool Match 2:- Sandwich: 3 Sheffield Hallam University: 2
What with the total concentration typical of a Sandwich display, your correspondent cannot
remember anything about this game other than Sandwich won and that he scored. Credit to
Sheffield for their enthusiasm and let's hope the idea of a team song catches on. An unnamed
source has revealed that Sandwich are working on songs to the tunes of 'Horny' and 'Champagne
Supernova'.
Pool Match 3:- Sandwich: 3 Paal Central: 5
There is nothing like the prospect of getting murdered on the korfball pitch to get Sandwich to
concentrate a little, run a bit and jump occasionally. Sandwich played very well to keep up
with Paal until their late surge eased them through to victory. It was a good team performance
from Sandwich with David's excellent goal from a long shot being the highlight.
Pool Match 4:- Sandwich: 5 Hogste Kanon (Edinburgh Uni 2): 0
Sandwich's attack responded to playing on the bigger pitch by crowding round the post and missing
chance after chance against an inexperienced side. A late burst of scoring produced a result
that reflected the difference in experience between the teams. This left Sandwich second in their pool, with only
one defeat to their name (against the eventual tournament winners!!)
QUARTER FINAL!! Nottingham Old Boys 5 Sandwich 1
Given the long break between games, Sandwich warmed down in the nearest pub and this took its
toll. They started sluggishly and never recovered sufficiently to worry NOB, who were resolute
in defence and enthusiastic in attack. However, NOB's flow was prematurely ended by incorrect
time-keeping. Much of the game's energy had been sapped due to the enforced interruption but
a late goal from Duncan meant that there was no white wash. A satisfying first day to the
tournament meant that Sandwich could finish no lower than 8th (out of 19 teams)
but, far more importantly, they could have a lie in as their games were later in the day.
However, this warm feeling was soon replaced by hunger as the restaurant took some two and
half hours to finish serving them. Weakened by hunger, the way Julia attacked her veal escalope
was impressive and slightly scary. This meant Sandwich didn't get to the ceileidh until it was almost
finished and sufficiently sober to appreciate the full horror of the cheese being played in the disco afterwards.
First play off : Edinburgh Old Boys: 5 Sandwich: 6
Sandwich coach's explained his master plan: go down by two goals in the first couple of minutes,
so giving the EOB a false sense of security; substitute himself off; have the sub take the
glory. Sandwich won the game with a late goal following some great long shooting from Karl
to bring Sandwich back into the game and terrier-like defending, with Nadia acting as the pit
bull.
5th/6th place play off : Edinburgh City: 5 Sandwich: 4
The teams were evenly matched, with goals being traded against determined defences.
The game looked to be heading towards a dreaded penalty shoot-out. However, a very late
Edinburgh goal either broke Sandwich's heart or filled them with relief depending on whether
they would have had to take a penalty.
A final placing of 6th and not getting embarrassed on the pitch counts as a very successful
tournament for Sandwich. Thanks to Edinburgh for organising another fantastic tournament.
The highlight of the tournament was, without doubt, the Edinburgh University Cheerleaders . . .
