Match Report
League Update - Jan-Feb 05
1st December 2002
Sandwich started the year with some crunch games against Bearsted and Spartans - both games that
we thought we could win on a good day, but could be turned over if we weren't playing at our best.
With that in mind, things looked bleak when a phonecall from Linda revealed that with an hour to go she was stuck on the
wrong side of the River Thames with the Dartford crossing closed - with no female subs, Sandwich were up against it.
In the first match against Bearsted, 7 man (person?) Sandwich got off to a good start, pulling a couple of goals ahead early. Some outstanding play from
our indefatiguable division of 3 helped us stay in front, and throguhout the match we always managed to maintain a small cushion. Despite tiring near
the end, Sandwich managed to hold on to secure an extremely satisfying victory by 9 to 5.
The second game against Spartans was always going to be a tougher affair, and with Linda still stuck somewhere the wrong side of the Blackwall
tunnel, playing them with 7 looked an impossible task. However, again Sandwich played a great first half, with our same magnificent 3 holding thier own admirably to allow us to
reach half time with a 4 goal lead. However, a cloud was on the horizon, as Spartans brought Karl on to torment us! the addition of this 'national league ringer'(!) did turn the flow of the game as Sandwich
tired, allowing Spartans to close to within one goal at 10 - 9 with 5 minutes to go. A tense finish was in prospect, with Spartans pressing for an equaliser. However, Sandwich managed one last flourish to
score again to take the game 11 - 9 at hte fianl whistle. So this was a very successful start to the year, with special respect going to Juin, Arnaud and Julia for an outstanding display
in their division of 3 in both matches.
Our second matchday of the year saw us up against K-Kwiek and a return match against Spartans. Struggling to get a team together
Sandwich gave league debuts to Richard and Will (stepping in after just the one training session!).
Against awell drilled K-Kwiek team the relatively inexperienced Sandwich struggled to make in-roads, and K-Kwiek soon pulled into a commanding lead, finally
taking the match 10 - 2. In the second match of the day against Spartans Sadnwich were unable to repeat the performance of the previous week, and it was clear that
hanging on to get a point was our main aim. As the match drew towards the final whistle Sandwich's defence held out to secure their point with a 6 - 12 loss.
So, a mixed bag of results, with some good wins, and some valuable match experience being gained for some of
our newer players.
