Ruined Altanour Lodge at the head of Glen Ey

Wednesday 5th June 2002, cycled in from Inverey on the good road five miles up Glen Ey giving quick access to this remote area. This ruined cottage marks the end of the road and time to start walking.

The bouldery top of Carn Bhac with Beinn a' Ghlo in the distance.
A wet and boggy approach from Glen Ey gives out onto the flat boulder field of Carn Bhac with its two cairns, Beinn a' Ghlo seen in the distance, weather forecast was poor for the day so didn't wait here too long.

Small cairn marks the summit of Carn Bhacs' SW top.
Nice big flat top makes for quick progress, pause here for a moment to get a picture of the little cairn which marks the South West Top of Carn Bhac.

The cairn on carn a' Bhutha with Beinn Iutharn Mhor to the South.
Didn't pay any attention to the map and ended out on this 900m hill , time for another snap. There is a good view down toward Fealar Lodge from here so it was worth the visit before turning South for Beinn Iutharn Mhor.

East ridge of Beinn Iutharn Mhor, the mist has closed in.
The walk from Carn a' Bhutha though gentle means a plough through peat hags, heather and bog.Steepish climb through scree patches and onto the Beinn Iutharn Mhor East ridge, by the time I got there the mist had come down as per the forecast.

Summit of Beinn Iutharn Mhor with a little late season snow.
Doesn't do to be pessimistic though, because after a few moments the mist lifted to give this view from below the last approach to the top of the Munro.

Looking East into a darkening sky from the summit of Beinn Iutharn Mhor with the cairn in the foreground.
The weather stayed clear long enough to see the darkening sky coming in from the East , the tops clouded in a few moments after this and the rest of the day was spent walking by compass. I had planned to get the five Munros in this area today but common sense has to rule so decided to settle for the two tops which lie immediately to the South of this Munro.

Munro top Man nan Carn , here's a view of the summit cairn in the mist which has now come down for the rest of the day. The summit cairn of Beinn Iutharn Bheag in the mist.
Just a brace of misty cairns to finish the altitude work, still hoped to get An Socach but the weather just got worse from here.

Looking back West along the length of Loch nan Eun
On Beinn Iutharn Bheag I had been hearing a lot of birdcall, here's the explanation , this little lochan has two islands which somewhat unexpectedly carry a huge population of seagulls, I presume they are nesting there but didn't want to get too close, so took this pic before heading down to pick up the bike at Altanour Lodge.

It rained gently most of the way out on the bike, it's been poor weather in Scotland the last couple of months, never mind this was a good trip just the same.
Thanks for calling in.
