were installed to measure relative changes in X, Y co-ordinates at the beam nodes.

the tunnel. The system involved an alarm system that could be used to stop trains if

wire strain monitoring for Holme Tunnel.

The design and install an early warning system for the Severn Tunnel (100 year
old railway tunnel under the Bristol Channel) for use during the construction of a
new motorway bridge (The Second Severn Crossing) straddling the tunnel. The automatic
system gave alarms if movements or water ingress at selected locations exceeded pre-set
levels. Alarms were relayed via a site computer and radio telemetry to the British Rail
Authority and Welsh Water PLC, simultaneously. Client: Laing Joint Venture. 1991-95.
