Summary:
Schists are curious metamorphic rock in that they are not necessarily defined by mineral composition but by the well-developed parallel orientation of more than 50% of the minerals present. Typically hornblende and mica are particularly prone to reorientation. It is these mica-like minerals which give the rock a glistening appearance and are refrequently reflected in the naming of the rock e.g. hornblende schist, garnet-mica schist etc.
