Bethia, then living at 35 Cranston Street, Glasgow, was 24 years old, which would mean she was born in 1839 or 1840. According to the Old Parish Record (OPR) Index Births & Christenings (1553-1854), however, Bethia was born a few years earlier, in 1835, in the parish of Barony, County of Lanark. Information submitted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gives 1837 as her year of birth, and gives variations in her name - Margaret Berther and Bether, as well as Bethia. The Register of Marriages, above, and the OPR, agree that she was the daughter of James Miller and Helen Miller, maiden name Robertson. Note also:
(a) In the Register of Marriages, above, Bethia's signature is entered as a cross ("X"). Her mother, Helen, however, ten months later, in the registration of the birth of Helen Anna Georgina, does provide a signature, in noticably unsteady hand;
(b) OPR Index Births & Christenings (1553-1854) indicates that Bethia was the second child of James and Helen Miller; and
(c) The Register of Marriages, above, gives the profession of James Miller as "Engine Fitter Foreman". In December 1831, he had been a cotton spinner in Anderston - see below.
George William, then living at 46 Lancefield Street, Glasgow, was 25 years old, which would mean he was born in 1838 or 1839. Again, information submitted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gives different birth years, 1836 or 1837, and gives his place of birth as Ireland or Scotland. George William does not appear in the OPR Index Births & Christenings (1553-1854), which suggests he was born in Ireland. The Register of Marriages, above, and Helen's entry in the Register of Births, give as his profession, "Seaman (Merchant Service)". The Register of Marriages records his parents as Jane Teer, maiden name Annesley, and Edward Teer, Spirit Merchant, deceased.
George William Teer was a Freemason. See:
(a) certificate dated 1862; and
(b) certificate dated 1864.
