About the teams

Torbay

The Torbay team is made up of 21 members (19 men  2 women) whose ages vary from 20s to late 50s.  Normally a BURT (Back Up Response Team) has 15 members but due to the large area and the number of callouts  it was necessary to start another team, the Berry Head team  which is also classed as a BURT but only has 6 members.  The area the Torbay team cover, starts at a beach called Maidencombe in Torquay then all of Torbay down to Kingswear then up the river Dart to Totnes. The type of area varies considerably from 300 ft cliffs to sandy beaches.  During the summer months we get an influx of holiday makers who tend to keep us very busy.  Also part of the equipment we have is a 5m Avon R.H.I.B  which allows us to patrol our area afloat, and provide help to the public when required.  The area the boat can cover is from Straight Point off Exmouth to Start Point near Salcombe.

Berry Head
Out of the 21 members in Torbay, a separate team has been set up to cover one side of Torbay's guard, this team is called the Berry Head team, consisting of 6 persons.  This team carries equipment for searches and also for securing cliff fall casualties.
Berry Head's area covers a part of Torbay then up to Berry Head down to Kingswear and up the river Dart to a creek called Galmpton.
This set up I believe is quite different from other teams, as Berry Head team members are still part of Torbay, but  look after a large section of Torbay's area themselves and they are also classed as a B.U.R.T.
