Emergency calls for Torbay Coastguard Boat

torbay Coastguard boat is a Avon 5.4 rigid hull inflatable, which is based at Torbay station next to Paignton harbour.  As with Tamars boat in Plymouth we don't tend to be called out for casualties, but we do carry out Patrols at weekends which can become a very busy time and provide safety cover for various events.  Below is a list of calls the boat has dealt with from 1999 to Present

This page has been closed due to the Boat being Scrapped and is not being replaced.
A new boat is being located at Liverpool some 270 miles North.



28/05/01-14.15 While on patrol we were tasked to Preston sands after a report from Ambulance control that a man had fallen on the steps and they required our assistance, a crew member was put ashore to administer first aid.  The man had sustained a severe head injury, taken to Hospital by Ambulance.  UU  IRT, Torbay boat, Ambulance



27/05/01-13.15 While on patrol found a broken down jetski off Paignton pier, the jet ski was safely towed back into Paignton harbour


20/05/01-13.07 While on patrol we found a broken down jet ski, the jet ski was safely towed back into Paignton harbour


05/05/01-12.56 While on patrol the crew noticed a capsized boat on the Teighnmouth bar, while calling the ops room for back up from Teighnmouth lifeboat they managed to manoeuvre in and recover two persons from the water, both persons were transferred to the ILB who took them back to shore to be checked over by Paramedics, one person was taken to Hospital with a suspected heart attack.    UU  Torbay boat, ILB, Ambulance


28/01/01-12.54 While on patrol the boat was tasked to Little Dartmouth to help Dartmouth team recover a sheep that had gone over the cliff, both cliff man and sheep were safely put ashore in Dartmouth.


29/07/00-16.17 While on patrol two young lads were recovered from Roundam head after being cut off by the tide.


16/07/00-18.58 While on patrol a speed boat was towed in to Babbacombe beach after suffering steering problems.


16/07/00-16.10 While on patrol two children were found on Livermead head who were cut off by the tide, both were recovered to Gas works beach.


16/07/00-15.44 While on patrol the crew saw three young lads waving for help at the bottom of Corbyns head as they had been cut off by the tide, the boat managed to recover them and take them to Torquay harbour.


09/0/7/00 - 14.46 While on patrol the crew found a windsurfer having trouble getting back to shore, so he was picked up and taken back to Tor Abbye sands safe and well.  UU  Torbay boat


28/06/00 - 11.38 While on patrol the boat was tasked to Broadsands after a report of a speed boat broken down, the boat had run out of fuel so the boat was towed back to Harbour.  UU  Torbay boat


11/06/00-???? While on patrol the boat was called to Paignton beach after a report of a broken down speed boat, the boat was safely towed back to Paignton Harbour.  UU  Torbay boat


07/05/00-???? While on patrol the boat was tasked to St Marys Bay after a report of a person in difficulty in the water, when the boat arrived the person was out of the water and was being treated by the crew from the Air Ambulance. UU  Torbay boat, BURT, Helimed.


29/04/00-15.03 While on patrol the boat found two teenagers cut off by the tide at Corbyn Head, both were safely recovered and taken to Torquay harbour. UU  Torbay boat


23/04/00-15.41 While on patrol we were tasked to Corbyn Head after a report of two children cut off by the tide, we managed to get in and safely recover them, then take them back to Torquay harbour. UU  Torbay boat


22/04/00-14.34 While on patrol we found a dive RIB that had broken down off Orestone rock, we stood by until they managed to restart their engine then we escorted them back to Brixham harbour. UU  Torbay boat


12/09/99-15.36 While on patrol a small motor boat was found that had broken down, the boat and its occupants were towed into Torquay harbour. UU  Torbay boat


04/09/99-12.36 Tasked to Straight Point near Exmouth after a report of a Dolphin that was stranded, the dolphin was about 4 ft long and kept swimming in to the beach, there were about 100 people walking around it and confusing it.  So we decided to use a blanket stretcher and take the dolphin out to sea until a member of public picked it up and plonked it in to the Exmouth inshore lifeboat, so at that point we all headed out to sea about 1/2  mile and released it.  It was not seen again and has not been washed ashore that we are aware.  UU  Torbay boat, Exmouth ILB, Exmouth IRT


13/08/99-10.20 Tasked to Brixham Harbour after Ordnance was left outside the Harbourmasters office, the area was secured from the seaward side to allow the EODV to take the device out to sea for detonation. UU  Torbay boat, IRT, IRT


11/08/99-11.35 While on patrol during the day of the Eclipse we responded to a red flare fired near Sharkham point, Upon investigation we found that it had been fired from inland,  14.33 We were then spotted three young children cut off by the tide near Hollicombe, we recovered them and took them back to Paignton harbour to be met by there parents. 15.15 We were tasked to Thatcher rock area after a report that two people had received concussion after being hit by the boom of the sailing boat, when we arrived on scene one of the casualties was an elderly lady semi conscious and the other was a middle aged man also semi conscious, it was decided that it would be best to get a Helo to winch the casualties off by stretcher in case of spinal injuries.  Both persons were taken off by rescue Helicopter Hotel Lima and the yacht was escorted into Torquay harbour.  UU  Torbay boat, Helo


08/08/99-16.19 While on patrol the boat was tasked to Goodrington after a report of a jetski being blown onto rocks, when they arrived on scene it was under tow by a speed boat, they were both escorted to Paignton Harbour. UU  IRT, Torbay boat


25/07/99-14.00 While on patrol we were tasked to Ansteys Cove after a report of two men stuck on the cliff, on our arrival it was apparent that they were climbers and were ok.  UU  Torbay boat


25/07/99-13.39 While on patrol we were tasked to Meadfoot, after a report of a body in the water.  When we arrived on scene the person had been pulled from the water and was being treated by a local dive club, two crew were put ashore to assist, then helped to evacuate the person to an ambulance. 23/07/99-19.38 We were called out after a report of a swimmer in the middle of the bay about a mile off shore on his own with no back up. When we arrived at his last known position he could not be seen, so we carried out a search from Torquay to Brixham and luckily found him about 1 mile from Brixham.  The man did not want to get out so we followed him in to Brixham to make sure he got there. When he arrived at Brixham he was greeted by our land unit who advised him of the dangers of swimming alone a mile off shore. UU  Torbay boat, IRT


19/07/99-20.48 While training in the bay we spotted three young kids cut off by the tide near Hollicombe, we managed to get in and recover them back to the beach.  The Police were called as the children were new to the area and were lost. UU  Torbay boat


11/07/99-16.22 While on patrol we were tasked to Hollicombe beach after a report of two children waving for help whilst hanging on to a marker buoy, when we arrived on scene we carried out a quick search until we spotted someone on shore waving, one crew member was put ashore to investigate and it turned out that a member of public had swum out to the kids and escorted them back in. 11/07/99-15.37 While on patrol we were approached by a person in a boat, he informed us that his son had gone missing driving a small R.H.I.B.  We carried out a coastline search from Torquay to Brixham and found the lad safe and well in Brixham Harbour. UU  Torbay boat


03/07/99- While on patrol watching over the long distance swim, we were tasked to Daddyhole after a report of a climber in trouble.  One crew member was put ashore to assist the cliff man who had been lowered to the base of the cliff.  The climber had broken his ankle and once the person had been stabilized by the medic from the Coastguard Helo, he was winched up and flown to Hospital.  UU  Torbay boat, BURT, WISKEY BRAVO


28/03/99- While on patrol we had a report of 4 children cut off by the tide on Roundham head, the children were trapped, so they were recovered and taken back to Paignton harbour. UU  Torbay boat
