999 Call out for Berry Head
This page contains all call outs for the year 2000 for the Berry Head Team

These are some abbreviations used on some of the jobs, UU = Units used, Helo = Helicopter, LB = Lifeboat
 ILB = Inshore Lifeboat, IRT = Initial Response Team, BURT = Back Up Response Team.
Oscar 4 is the local council security boat.
The Helicopters we use are:- RESCUE 193 & 192 from Chivenor (RAF), Hotel Lima and Wiskey Bravo from Portland (Coastguard), Oscar 99 from Exeter (Police), Helimed from Exeter ( Air Ambulance).

26/12/00-15.48 Tasked to Shoalstone pool area after a report of a canoeist in trouble, the area was searched but nothing was found.  UU  BURT, BURT, LB, WB


24/12/00-02.05 Tasked to Daddy hole plain after a report of a missing male, a search of the area was carried out and the man was found by a Coastguard team on the cliff path, due to his condition he was strechered up the path to a waiting Ambulance.  UU  BURT, LB, 169


17/12/00-14.49 While on patrol the team was tasked to Meadfoot beach to keep a small fishing vessel under observation as it had a rope around its prop, the vessel was towed into Torquay Harbour by a passing boat.  UU  IRT


22/11/00-01.23 Tasked to Berry Head after a report of a person fallen overboard from a container ship, Torbay lifeboat dropped her tow of the fishing vessel to assist in the search also Teignmouth and Exmouth lifeboats were callout to help.  The casualty was located by Helo 169 who transferred him to Torbay Hospital.  Sadly the man died later that night.   UU  BURT, LB, LB, LB, Rescue 169


21/11/00-21.29 Tasked to Berry head look out to keep a fishing vessel with steering problems under observation.  The vessel was towed into Brixham Harbour by Torbay lifeboat.  UU  IRT, LB


09/11/00-15.26 Tasked to Goodrington after a report of a possible wind surfer in trouble, the man managed to make it ashore unaided.  UU  IRT


09/11/00-14.12 Tasked to Oddicombe after a report from the Police of a man over the cliff, the man was recovered by our cliff man to the waiting arm of the Police.  UU  BURT, Oscar 99


04/11/00-15.16 Tasked to Sharkham point after a report that a 13 year old boy had fallen over the cliff,  upon our arrival two lads guided us to the location .  One cliff man assailed down to the boy about 40 ft below who then immediately administered CPR until the arrival of the Helicopter.  The boy was air lifted to Torbay Hospital but sadly he died later that day.  UU  BURT, WB,  Police, ILB


25/10/00-18.54 Tasked to Brixham harbour to meet the lifeboat who had recovered a man that fell in to one of his vessels holds.  UU  IRT, LB


21/10/00-17.23 Tasked to Frouerd point to keep a broken down yacht under observation while a small inflatable towed it into Dartmouth.  UU  IRT


18/10/00-03.46 Tasked to Beverley park holiday camp after a report of a missing male, a full search was carried out by the coastguard and also the Dartmoor rescue team who had been called in to help.  The gentleman was found cold and confused about 10 miles away from the camp by a member of public.  UU  BURT, Police, Dartmoor rescue


15/10/00-06.23 Tasked to Brixham harbour after a report of a small sailing boat in difficulty,  the boat had caught a mooring chain around its propeller and was stuck fast with an incoming tide.  The lifeboat managed to clear the chain but it had sustained damage to its hull and started to take on waster,  the vessel was pumped out then towed further into the harbour for recovery.  UU  IRT, LB


03/10/00-19.03 Tasked to Torquay area to search for a missing 14 year old lad, an area from Torquay harbour to Hopes Nose up to Oddicombe was search and the lad was found safe  and well at Babbacombe by Coastguard.  UU  BURT


30/09/00-14.00 Tasked to Berry Head after a report from the Police of a car over the cliff.  A search of the cliff face was carried out just in case, but nothing was found.  It is thought that the car was stolen then dumped.  UU  BURT, Police


24/09/00-00.12 Tasked to Frouerd point area after a report of a red flare,  area searched but nothing was found.  UU  IRT


23/09/00-00.23 Tasked to Princess Pier after a report of a person in the water, all units were stood down before there arrival as the person managed to self recover.  UU  BURT, ILB


07/09/00- Berry Head mobile was diverted to Torquay harbour after a report of a broken down motor boat, the vessel was towed in by the ILB.  UU  IRT, ILB


07/09/00-22.16 Tasked to Walls Hill area after a report of a man over the cliff, the man had fallen off the cliff path breaking his arm then fell into the water.  He was luckily found and picked up by the LB.  UU  BURT, LB


03/09/00-17.20 Tasked to Scabbacombe beach after a report of a women with a broken leg,  Hotel Lima managed to land and recover the cas then take straight to Hospital.  UU  BURT, HL


02/09/00-14.50 Tasked to Berry Head after a report of a broken down speed boat, the boat was found near Dartmouth, and was towed in by the Harbour launch.  UU  IRT


29/08/00-13.44 Tasked to Berry Head after a report from Police of clothing found in the area, area searched but nothing was found.  UU  IRT, Police


26/08/00-21.34 Tasked to Torquay after a report of a possible missing swimmer, a full search was carried out but nothing was found.  UU  BURT, 169, Oscar 99, LB, ILB


26/08/00-15.00 Tasked to Berry Head to keep observations on a dismasted yacht, the yacht was eventually towed into Brixham Harbour by the LB.  UU  IRT, LB


25/08/00-06.47 Tasked to Brixham Breakwater after a report of a yacht on fire,  when the lifeboat arrived the fire was out so the LB towed the vessel in to Brixham harbour to be checked by the Fire Brigade.  UU  IRT, LB, Fire Brigade

22/08/00-12.31 Tasked to St Mary's beach after a report of an injured male, the person was evacuated by the air ambulance.  UU  BURT,


21/08/00-20.01 Tasked to Torquay after a report of 4 boys missing, all boys were found by Police before our arrival.  UU  BURT, Police

07/08/00-20.12 Tasked to Berry Head quarry after a report of a boy suffering a Asthma attack, the boy was located and brought up to a waiting Ambulance.  UU  IRT, Ambulance


07/08/00-18.32 Tasked to Elberry cove to search for a missing male, the man was found by Coastguards and Police on a golf coarse.  UU  BURT, ILB, Police


06/08/00-16.09 Tasked to Torbay Hospital to prepare a Helicopter landing site for an incoming casualty.  UU  IRT


05/08/00-15.04 Tasked Brixham Breakwater after a report of ordinance on the beach, E.O.D recovered the device and removed it for disposal.  UU  IRT, Police, E.O.D


30/07/00-21.54 Tasked to Broadsands after a report of a pedalow stolen from the beach, the area was searched and the boat was found in a small cove, then two lads were found nearby but denied all knowledge of it.  UU  BURT, ILB


29/07/00-20.39 Tasked to broadsands to search for a missing man, a full search was carried out but nothing was found.  UU  BURT, ILB,


27/07/00-17.56 Called out to meet vessel being towed in by a passing motor boat.  UU  IRT

22/07/00-14.23 Tasked to meet the Torbay Lifeboat who was towing in a Yacht with engine failure.  UU  IRT, LB

22/07/00-12.34 Tasked to St Mary's bay area after a report of a person with a broken leg, the person was air lifted to Hospital by HL.  UU  IRT, HL


22/07/00-11.08 Tasked to keep a yacht under observation after it became dismasted, the vessel was towed in by Torbay Lifeboat.  UU  IRT, LB


20/07/00-16.24 Tasked to Sharkham point after a report that a child had fallen and hurt his leg, the lad was recovered and transported to Hospital by HL.  IRT, LB, HL


17/07/00-20.28 Tasked to Brixham Breakwater after a report of a speed boat broken down 1 mile off, the boat was safely towed back to Brixham by the ILB.  UU  IRT, ILB


16/07/00-16.11 Tasked Man Sands after a report of a collision with a speed boat and a rowing boat, the lad in the rowing boat managed to get ashore safely.  UU  IRT, LB, HL


15/07/00-18.13 Tasked to Shoalstone pool area after a report of two young lads cut off by the tide, both lads were safely recovered by the ILB.  UU  IRT, ILB


13/07/00-00.08 Tasked to Daddy Hole after a report of a person over the cliff, when we arrived the Fire brigade were trying to reach the person over the cliff but could not reach him.  A Coastguard cliff man was lowered over the cliff and managed to locate the person suffering from fractures and burns, a second cliff man with a Paramedic was lowered and administered first aid, then Helo 169 managed to winch the person off and transport him to Hospital.  Sadly the person died three days later


09/07/00-21.21 Tasked to search Torbay coastline after a report of a distress call on chan 16, the area was searched but nothing was found.  UU  BURT, LB


07/07/00-21.38 Tasked to Brixham Harbour to meet the Brixham Bell after a report of a passenger with a ankle injury, the person was assisted ashore and taken to Hospital.  UU  IRT


02/07/00-19.07 Tasked to Churston Cove after a report of a young lad with a arm injury, the lad had dislocated his shoulder and was evacuated by the ILB.  UU  BURT, ILB


01/07/00-19.37 Tasked to Battery Gardens after a report of a broken down jet ski, the object turned out to be two oil drums.  UU  IRT.


30/06/00-13.53 Tasked to Churston cove area after a report that an elderly women was having a heart attack, the women was found on the coastal path who was then treated by Paramedics and air lifted to Hospital.  UU  IRT, ILB, HL


23/06/00-22.57 Tasked to Brixham marina after a report of a missing person from the Marina, the area was searched but luckily the person turned up at home.  UU  BURT, ILB


19/06/00-18.30 Tasked to Berry Head to carry out a search for a missing person, nothing was found.  UU  BURT, HL


17/06/00-22.31 Tasked to Broadsands after reports of a red flare, the area was searched but nothing was found.  UU  IRT


12/06/00-14.05 Tasked to Berry Head Lookout after a distress call was picked up on channel 16. Torbay area was searched but nothing was found.  UU  BURT, LB


11/06/00-06.58 Called out to Berry Head after a report of a Deer at the bottom of the cliffs, a search was carried out but nothing was found.  UU  IRT


09/06/00-15.57 Tasked to Berry Head lookout to keep a yacht under observation as it had engine failure and problems with its rigging, the vessel was towed in by Torbay Lifeboat.  UU  IRT, LB


21/05/00-20.27 Tasked to Brixham Marina after a report of a missing person, the man turned up safe and well at his home address.  UU  IRT


21/05/00-12.53 Called out to Berry Head lookout to try and spot a carrier (a vessel that is permanently transmitting on a channel) on chan 16, the transmission stopped before we could identify the vessel.  UU  IRT


20/05/00-16.26 Called to Saltern Cove after a report of a dog over the cliff.  see pics for details


14/05/00-02.10 Tasked to the Regina Hotel after a report of a person that had fallen onto a roof from a cliff, the person was recovered by the Fire brigade.  UU  BURT


13/05/00-06.35 Called out to Berry Head quarry after a report of a dog over the cliff, a search was carried out but nothing was found.  We later found out that the owner had found the dog at the bottom of the cliff and had taken it to a vet before our arrival.  UU  BURT


10/05/00-15.04 Tasked to Corbyn Head after a report of a person fallen off the cliff, Rescue Hotel Lima who was training in the area was able to recover the cas and take him to the Hospital.  UU  BURT and Hotel LIMA


07/05/00-14.26 Tasked to St Mary's Bay after a report of a person in the water in difficulty, the person when ashore was evacuated by the Air Ambulance to Hospital.  UU  BURT, Torbay boat and Helimed


02/05/00-16.45 Tasked to Corbyn Head after a women became trapped by the tide, the women was recovered and taken to Hospital by Hotel Lima.  UU  BURT, ILB and Hotel LIMA


02/05/00-09.36 Tasked to Tor Abbey sands to search for a possible missing women, nothing was found.  UU  BURT, ILB and Oscar99


30/04/00-19.03 Tasked to Sugar Loaf Hill after reports of people cut off by the tide, a search was carried out but nothing was found. It is thought that the persons came from a beach party nearby but no one would admit it.  UU  BURT


23/04/00-20.16 Tasked to Broadsands after a report of two missing teenagers, a thorough search was carried out but nothing was found.  The lads turned up at home later that day.  UU  BURT, ILB and Oscar 99


17/04/00-21.29 Tasked to Brixham fish quay after a report of a fishing vessel on fire, upon investigation it turned out to be a small heater using coal that was letting off a bit too much smoke.  UU  IRT, Fire brigade


17/04/00-20.13 Tasked to Kingswear to meet with a incoming sail training vessel with a young girl who had hit her head and had blurred vision, the girl was helped off and taken to a waiting ambulance.  UU  IRT


16/04/00-16.36 Tasked to Torquay to help recover two young girls stuck up a cliff, both girls were safely recovered
up to the cliff top.  UU  BURT, LB, ILB


05/04/00-05.28 Tasked to Brixham fish quay after a report of a missing male from a boat tied along side, a search of the area was carried out but nothing was found, until a man walked up to one of the search teams asking for the clothing we had found on the boat, it is believed the man while drunk had got of his boat and gone asleep on another.  UU  BURT, ILB


03/04/00-20.10 Tasked to Berry Head after a report of a red flare off Thatcher gut area, when arrived on scene we saw a white fire work in the sky, then Torbay team found a empty box of fire works.  UU  IRT, LB


01/04/00-14.34 Tasked to Berry head after a report of a upturned boat, a search of the area was carried out but nothing was found.  It is now thought it was a speed boat with a very low sides that was operating in the area.  UU  IRT, ILB


30/03/00-20.23  Tasked to Torquay after a report from the Fire Brigade of a boy stuck on a cliff inland, the boy was recovered within 5 min of the team being paged by the fire brigade.   UU  BURT


24/03/00-22.10 Tasked to Churston cove after a report of two persons in difficulty in the water, on our arrival the persons were out of the water but needed medical attention, they were both ferried around to Brixham harbour by the LB.  At that point we were informed that a girl from the party on the beach had gone missing, a search was carried out but girl was found safe and well at a friends house.  UU  BURT, BURT, LB, Oscar 99


24/03/00-13.42 Called out to Ladybird beach after a report of a oil drum on the beach, the drum was empty and had been in the water for a long time, the drum was removed by the council.  UU  IRT


19/03/00-18.40 Tasked to Sharkham after a report of a collapsed male on the cliff path, we ferried the paramedics in our vehicle to the casualty, then using our Evac Body Splint carried the person to our vehicle and drove him to the ambulance about 1/2 mile.  UU  IRT


15/03/00-12.08 Tasked to Sharkham Point after a report of a trawler picking up a object, upon investigation from the EOD, it turned out to be 2000 lb bomb.  The device was detonated out to sea and sent a plume of water about 200 ft into the air.  UU  IRT, EOD


25/02/00-13.52 Tasked to Petit Tor after a report of two boys stuck half way up a cliff.  The boys were located by the team and checked to see if they were safe, the lads were on a large ledge about 80 ft up and 30 ft down from the top and were ok, but due to the awkward access to the cliff top and the loose rocks above the two children it was
decided that a Helo would be required, 169 from Chivenor was tasked and was able to safely recover the lads.  UU

20/02/00-12.57 Tasked to Fishcombe area after a report of two missing boys, all search teams were tasked to this
area after finding the 9 year old at Broadsands.  The two lads were safely located by the ILB. UU  IRT  BURT

20/02/00-11.45 Tasked to Broadsands car park to meet with the Police after a report of a missing 9 year old boy.
The area was searched using teams from Torbay and Berry Head, inshore life boat, Police and Helo Oscar 99.  The
boy was safely located by one of the Coastguard teams and returned to the Police.  UU  IRT  BURT  ILB   Oscar

20/02/00-10.10 Called out to a report of a sheep stuck on a cliff near Scabbacombe Head, the sheep was recovered by the ILB who were training in the area.  UU  IRT  ILB


18/02/00-17.45 Tasked to Walls Hill Torquay after a report of two dogs over the cliff, one dog managed to recover
himself and the other was safely recovered by our cliff man.  UU  BURT


17/02/00-11.18 Tasked to Berry Head after a report from Police of a missing male, a full search was carried out
using search  teams ashore, Inshore lifeboat and the coastguard Helo using thermal imaging cameras. Nothing was

06/02/00-11.45 Tasked to keep a small vessel that was making heavy weather on route to Dartmouth under
observation as well as the inshore lifeboat that was shadowing it in case it got in to trouble.  UU  LB  ILB  IRT


04/02/00-16.24 Tasked to Brixham  harbour after a report of a capsized speed boat with two persons in the water, a
full search was made and nothing was found, thought to be a hoax call.  UU  ILB  IRT


26/01/00-09.42 Tasked to the Breakwater to assist recovery of a body in the water.  UU  IRT  ILB


25/01/00-15.26 Tasked to Babbacombe after a report from the Fire brigade of two dogs over the cliff, the dogs were
recovered by the Fire brigade before our arrival.  UU  BURT


20/01/00-12.47 Called out to a report of a oil drum on Breakwater beach, the drum was found to be empty.  UU
