THE COVENTRY WE HAVE LOST

This is a site dedicated to older photographic images of Coventry. It illustrates the city centre and the suburbs in a way that the modern visitor or resident might find surprising. Any thriving industrial area will damage its past more than quiet market towns. As the fastest growing city in Britain for much of the first half of the twentieth century Coventry suffered more than most (even before the Blitz). The photographs used here date, mainly,  from the early part of that period. Most were taken by a small group of commercial photographers who made money from selling their photographs as postcards during the 'Golden Age of the Postcard' in the years before the First World War.
