NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Saturday 21 September 2003
BARNSLEY 1 SWINDON TOWN 1

Had this been a boxing match the Town bench would have thrown in the towel as Barnsley forced effort upon effort on Swindon's goal.

Barnsley opened the game brightly with Chris Lumsdon at the heart of everything good.  Twice the midfielder had shots on goal, the second of which forced a tip over save from Evans in the Town goal.

Betsy crossed from the right where Hayward had Barnsley's first sight of goal inside ten minutes but the midfielder sent his header wide of Evans'goal.

Lumsdon fired a left foot shot narrowly wide of goal as Barnsley looked to force the opener.

County who boasted five wins on the bounce prior to this game always looked dangerous and in Parkin and Mooney, they were always going to be a threat to the Barnsley defence.

David Duke fired Barnsley a warning shot from the left flank when he fired in a cross that Mooney almost converted but his effort when straight into the arms of Ilic.  Minutes later and Barnsley's failure to close down Duke on the right saw the winger cross the ball into the box for Parkin.  The Town striker brought the ball down with one touch and turned Handyside before clinically placing his shot past Ilic.

It was cruel on Barnsley but Swindon's strike-force, although denied much space, always looked menacing.

The same could not be said of Barnsley who despite controlling possession in the first half could not force Evans into any further action.

Barnsley came out after the re-start in much the same mood as the did against Oldham in mid-week.  Gorre was inspirational and it was his battling that brought about Barnsley's equaliser.  A defensive clearance struck the Dutchman in the face but he battled on and laid the ball into the path of Betsy who surged towards the area before sending his shot thumping against the crossbar.  It was Fallon who was on hand to take the ball first time and fire past Evans from the rebound.

Barnsley, just prior to the goal, had headers from Ireland and Fallon that should have given them the equaliser but it appeared that their luck was out.

Swindon weathered the early second half storm and had a ten minute spell which saw them dominate the action.  O'Hallaron went close to giving them the lead and Duke, Mooney and Parkin always looked dangerous.

The Reds threw everything at Town in the last ten minutes in an attempt to snatch the winner.  Gorre shot narrowly wide on two occasions and Fallon then struck the crossbar from a Gorre corner.

Town almost snatched a bizarre winner when Ilic came racing out of his goal and Igoe sent a shot against a post with the Reds 'keeper in no mans land.

Barnsley: Ilic, Crooks, Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside, Lumsdon, Hayward (Austin),O'Callaghan , Gorre, Betsy and Fallon.
