NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2 Saturday 28 September 2003 PLYMOUTH 2 BARNSLEY 0
Plymouth boasted a seven match unbeaten run going into this match, whilst the Reds had failed to win in their last three games.
Plymouth took all three points from this encounter and were good value for their win with the Reds lacking any real ideas going forward.
Indeed, Barnsley had to thank their goalkeeper Ilic for keeping the Reds in the match as he made several key saves to give the Reds a fighting chance.
Plymouth's Evans had the first real attempt of the match when he fired a shot wide from 20 yards for the hosts.
Ilic was first called into action five minutes later when he tipped a Norris shot away on 23 minutes. Norris had another chance just several minutes later but he could only manage to fire his shot straight at the Barnsley goalkeeper.
Evans had another scoring opportunity for the hosts but he again wasted the chance and gave Ilic an easy save.
McCormack in the hosts goal wasn't tested until after half an hour when Fallon headed goalward from Gallimore's centre, but it was easy pickings for the 'keeper.
Plymouth took the lead on xx minutes when centre back xxx planted a far post header past Ilic.
Fallon struck the bar for the Reds and Betsy missed a sitter from just six yards when he fired wide when it looked easier to score. That was as good as it got for the travelling Tykes.
The Reds gave a debut to new signing Carson in the second half but he was unable to make any real impact on a Reds display than was devoid of any attacking ideas.
Plymouth leapfrogged over the Reds following this victory but there's still little in it at this early stage in the season.
Barnsley: Ilic, Crooks, Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside (Kay), Lumsdon, Austin ,O'Callaghan (Carson), Gorre, Betsy and Fallon.
