NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2 Saturday 17 August 2003 BOURNEMOUTH 2 BARNSLEY 2
Barnsley maintained their league unbeaten run at Dean Court, albeit to just two games. It was, nevertheless, refreshing to see the team continue to play the game the right way under Thordarson and Glavin.
Neil Austin who came on against Blackpool in the Carling Cup in midweek retained his place in the starting line up, whilst Chris Lumsdon also returned to the starting eleven in place of Gibbs who gave a disappointing show last Tuesday night.
Kay tested Moss in the Bournemouth goal after quarter of an hour, but it was Steve Fletcher who put the host ahead after 26 minutes. A deep centre was met by the head of Fletcher who made no mistake to bury his chance past Ilic.
O'Connor should have put Bournemouth two up but he sent his shot over the crossbar, much to the relief of the Barnsley defence.
Craig Ireland registered his first goal for the club when the big centre-back sent a stunning shot past Moss into the top corner just before the break.
Barnsley's defence then showed another glimpse of older times when they made a right mess of clearing the ball inside the box, much to the delight of Fletcher who tucked away Bournemouth's second less than a minute later.
Fletcher had a great opportunity to grab his hat-trick on 72 minutes but Illic made an excellent save to deny a certain goal.
Betsy and Kay both had speculative efforts for the Reds whilst they withheld Bournemouth's pressure.
Enter Dean Gorre on 56 minutes. The Dutchman who has returned to form after being given a free role scored a magnificent equaliser from the left hand side. Gorre picked the ball up on the left and ran at the defence before a delightful "nut meg" set him up for a low well placed shot past the outstretched Moss.
For much of the second period the Reds had to withstand a great deal of pressure from their Dean Court hosts, but a combination of bad finishing, luck and great goalkeeping by illic ensured that they took a point from this match.
Barnsley: Ilic, Austin (Mullighan), Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside, Betsy, Kay, Lumsdon, Gorre (Neil), O'Callaghan and Fallon (Rankin).
