NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Saturday 23 August 2003
BARNSLEY 1 BRIGHTON 0

Barnsley ended this match with ten men after Chris Lumsdon was sent off following a second bookable offence with less than quarter of an hour of this match remaining.

Brighton who topped the table going into this fixture fielded Leon Knight, the pint sized striker on loan from Chelsea who had recorded four goals this term prior to this outing.

The Barnsley manager had clearly done his home work as the Reds defence gave the striker very little opportunity to any one on one situations.  In fact the most space that the Reds defence afforded Knight was when he broke free on the right to fire in a centre that Mayo tucked away which was ruled out for offside.

Dean Gorre was given his customary free role behind Fallon and he shined once again, causing the Brighton defence all sorts of problems from the left side.

Betsy set up Barnsley's first chance inside the first quarter of an hour when his deep cross found Fallon who could only fire his effort wide on the slide.

Gorre then tested the palms of Roberts in the Brighton goal when he fired a low shot from the left after a great cross field ball from Lumsdon.

The game was full of niggle from the first whistle and it was Brighton's
No11 Darius Henderson who instigated the tension with an early elbow on Austin inside the opening exchanges.

Austin who managed to field a number of crosses from the right back position clearly had the red mist clouding his judgement as he sought retribution with a late tackle on Mayo.  A booking for the Reds youngster was inevitable.

Austin was withdrawn at the break, probably to ensure that the Reds kept eleven men on the field and was replaced by Hayward which saw O'Callaghan moved to right back.

Barnsley found their game in the second period and began to dominate the proceedings without really hurting the visitors.  That was until Gallimore's inswinging left foot free-kick from the right found Betsy in a crowded penalty area and the winger headed home.

Lumsdon was dismissed not long after Barnsley's goal when he caught Jones in a fifty-fifty challenge as the Reds looked to turn the screw.

Barnsley had to endure late possession by Brighton and Ilic made a magnificent match-winning save to deny Harding's header which was destined for the top right hand corner of Barnsley's goal.

The Reds managed to hold out with ten men to make it two league wins from two at Oakwell with two very pleasing clean sheets.

Referee Mr. L. Mason from Lancashire had a nightmare and hopefully he might learn something about his performance today.

Barnsley: Ilic, Austin (Hayward), Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside, Betsy, Kay, Lumsdon, Gorre (Gibbs), O'Callaghan and Fallon (Mullighan).
