NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Monday 25 August 2003
BLACKPOOL 0 BARNSLEY 2

Barnsley roared to the top of the second division table after this hugely deserved 2-0 victory over Blackpool.

Lee Crooks returned to the Barnsley line up for the first time this season to replace Neil Austin at right back.

The Reds had to wait 9 minutes for their first shot on goal when good work on the right by Betsy set up Kay who shot straight at Jones in the Blackpool goal.

Four minutes later Kay had another goal bound attempt with his left foot after beating Hilton on the left which flew narrowly wide.

Jones was called into action again for Blackpool when Kay struck a half volley following a neat lay off by Fallon.

The break-through finally came for Barnsley on 28 minutes when Gorre's shot was spilled by Jones and Fallon followed up to fire the ball home for his first goal of the season.

Fallon who ran and chased all afternoon as the lone striker tried to add his and Barnsley's second on 37 minutes when he turned and shot from a tight angle but Jones tipped his effort over the crossbar.

Blackpool who had rarely troubled Barnsley's defence in the first half may have equalised with a bolt out of the blue.  Blackpool captain Davies fired a surprise 35 yard effort that Ilic pushed over his crossbar.

The resulting corner fell kindly to Davies in the box but he struck wide from close range to let Barnsley off the hook.

Barnsley should have led by a bigger margin at the interval and they did manage to score a deserved second 10 minutes after the re-start.  Chris Lumsdon took Fallon's neat lay off on the half volley and fired an absolute stunner past Jones who had no chance in the hosts goal.

Gallimore struck the crossbar of 57 minutes with a free-kick and Betsy should have done better when he ran into the box from the left only to see his shot tipped away by Jones.

Sheron forced a great save from Illic on 76 minutes when he palmed the former Barnsley striker's shot from the edge of the box away for a corner.  The Reds defence were off the hook again from the corner when Illc missed the centre, but the visitors failed to take advantage.

Rankin replaced Fallon late on for the Reds and the substitute almost added a third for Barnsley when he darted into the area but another save onto his near post by Jones thwarted the striker.

The 700 or so Barnsley fans that travelled to the seaside broke out into a late chorus of
"It's Just Like watching Brazil".  When did Barnsley fans last have the opportunity to sing that tune?

Barnsley now top the second division table and whilst it is still early days, it's certainly a lot more enjoyable that being at the other end of the league!

Barnsley: Ilic, Crooks, Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside, Betsy, Kay, Lumsdon, Gorre, O'Callaghan and Fallon (Rankin).
