NATIONWIDE LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Saturday 30th August 2003
BARNSLEY 1 NOTTS COUNTY 1

This was the battle of the clubs in administration and it was County who snatched a last gasp winner to deny Barnsley a third Oakwell league win on the bounce.

Barnsley started the game with some slick passing and it looked only a matter of time before they would get their noses in front.  However, it was County who should have been ahead as early as the fifth minute when Paul Riley failed to make contact with Baldry's right wing cross from six yards with the goal at his mercy.

It was a let off for Barnsley, but that was as good as it got for the visitors who rarely threatened the Reds goal in the first period. Reds 'keeper Ilic was almost a spectator for the duration of the first half.

Mildenhall denied Lumsdon's 25 yard effort with a good save on 22 minutes but the chance of the half fell to Kevin Betsy.  Gallimore floated a free-kick into the box and with Mildenhall making a mess of the cross the ball fell at the Barnsley winger's feet.  Unable to keep a cool head Betsy fired his shot way over the bar from twelve yards.

Barnsley started the second half brightly and within five minutes of the re-start they went ahead.  Dean Gorre scored his 4th goal of the season when he planted a low shot past Mildenhall from inside the area.  It was ball launched into the box by Lumsdon that the County defence made a real hash of and Gorre took full advantage.

Kay had a strong run from the left hand side culminate in a shot that Mildenhall tipped away at full stretch whilst Betsy also fired wide from the edge of the box after a strong run down the right.

As the second half wore on County began to come back into the game.  Substitute Paul Gibbs denied Platt a certain goal when he cleared off the line as the Reds appeared to run out of steam.

Betsy found himself in acres of room on the right flank and when he played Gorre in on the edge of the box only one outcome seemed inevitable.  However, Gorre got the ball stuck under his feet but managed to play in Betsy who could only fire straight at Mildenhall from five yards out.

County raced up the field from that effort just a minute from time and the Reds paid the price when substitute Heffernan rifled a low shot past Ilic into the Barnsley goal.

Port Vale's 1-0 victory this afternoon knocked the Reds off the top of the table, but eleven points taken from a possible fifteen must be very pleasing to Gudjon Thordarson.

Barnsley: Ilic, Crooks, Gallimore, Ireland, Handyside, Betsy, Kay, Lumsdon (Gibbs), Gorre, O'Callaghan and Fallon.
