Barnsley gained promotion back to division 2 when they beat
Rotherham Utd 1-0 in front of 26,000 fans on Tuesday 28 April 1981.
It was fitting that the winning goal should come from Ronnie Glavin. Parker and Barrowclough set up the goal, the latter beating Mountford on the by-line and providing a low cross for Glavin to thump home.
Mick McCarthy was awarded the club's Player of the Year before kick-off and the partnership of McCarthy and Evans was instrumental in Barnsley's success
Barnsley's promotion was their second in three years and it came
under the leadership of Norman Hunter.
Mr Geoff Buckle chairman at the time of the Reds promotion said. "When I came on the board in 1966 Barnsley F.C. were 92nd of the 92 league clubs." Clarke had guided Barnsley to 11th place in the 3rd division with his sights aimed at re-building a team capable of winning promotion the following campaign. Another new season started under Clarke but he never stayed to see the job through as he was tempted by the challenge of restoring Leeds Utd back to former glory.
Clarke's departure prompted the club to appoint Norman Hunter as player manager who had arrived at the club just under a year earlier as player coach. Clarke had seen his team lose their first game at home to newly promoted Portsmouth and a row developed between Clarke and Aylott when the latter was substituted. Upon leaving the pitch Aylott was seen by the Oakwell faithful throwing his shirt at Clarke in disgust. Clarke subsequently placed Aylott on the transfer list.
The Reds won their next match 1-0 at Hull but then had McCarthy sent off after just three minutes in the 1-1 draw at Gillingham.
