Barnsley ended their 1968/69 3rd division campaign in 10th place on 46 points despite taking only three points form their first seven matches, five without the influential Eric Winstanley. "Winnie" ended the season as the club's leading goalscorer with 14 in all competitions, not bad for a centr-half. This included a fabulous hat-trick against league leaders Watford at Oakwell, which was the first by a Barnsley player since Johnny Byrne struck three against Peterborough Utd in 1963/64. Watford had been leading the game 2-0 before the Reds made a dramatic fightback, cumunating in Eric's third just five minutes from time.
The Reds were knocked out of the F.A. Cup in Round 3 in a replay at Filbert Street, losing 2-1 to Leicester City. The Reds had held Leicester to a 1-1 draw at Oakwell which boasted a certain Alan Clarke, recently signed from Fulham for a record £150,000.
The biggest league gate at Oakwell saw Barnsley draw 1-1 in front of 14,000 spectators. Away from home the highest attendance was 17,401, this time for the return fixture at Swindon. The Reds lost on that occasion 2-0.
In the Football League Cup the Reds progressed as far as the 2nd round
