{Grand Ceilidh Club - Southend's barn dance club}

Get Active - Get Moving - Get Dancing

Come to a Barn Dance on Wednesday evenings in Essex at Southend's barn dance club, the Grand Ceilidh Club,

Everyone from 14 to 114 is welcome at our friendly club, dancing to live music, with a different band every week.
Come with a partner or come on your own - there'll always be someone to dance with.
Never been to a barn dance before? All our dances are 'called' by a professional who will tell you exactly what to do.
We meet from 8.30pm every Wednesday at Southend Rugby Club, a private licensed sports club, where drinks are available at club prices.

  • Come to make friends
  • Come to keep fit
  • Come to hear great music
  • Come to have fun!

Your first visit to the club is free. Follow the links to our How to join page to find out where we are.

See you on Wednesday!

Dancing is more than a social activity - this is what Sport England says: Participating in sport can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, some cancers, strokes, osteoporosis - the health benefits are well known and numerous. For example, statistics show that an active lifestyle can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50 per cent. …
getting involved in physical activity is FUN… honestly!
Not everyone will want to be out on a muddy rugby pitch but that's not your only option…
think about walking that extra mile, cycling, dance, yoga, tennis… anything that is fun and active… it all counts. And don't be a stranger… Don't forget exercising with friends is twice as much fun.
(Note: our emphasis)

Towards 10000 steps
Apparently it was 40 years ago in Japan that it was suggested that we should all take 10000 steps a day to keep us fit and healthy. Most of us walk 4000 to 6000 steps in a normal day so it just needs a little extra exercise to bring us up to the required level. So how many steps are we likely to take at an evening at the Grand Ceilidh Club? Well, this is something we shall be finding out in the near future as some of our members bring their pedometers to the club and we shall be working out an average. Preliminary results suggest that you are likely to take around 5000 steps in an evening at the club.

Please help by picking up a poster at the club and finding somewhere to display it - at work, in a local shop, in a church hall. You can think of something.
