Visiting circles bring success to summer event

Thanks to superb support from visiting wine circles East Coker's annual BBQ summer event attracted an attendance of over 100. Circles from Mendip, Fosseway, Taunton, Bridgwater, Exeter, Pinhoe and Honiton were represented.

Organisers and guests alike anxiously watched as rain clouds threatened but fortunately the threat did not materliase until after the scheduled close of the event. The event is traditionally held on the second Sunday in July and there was
no doubt that those who attended had a good time and enjoyed the value for money food on offer.

The Circle was fortunate that Andy Adams, a founder member of the Circle, and his wife, Dorrie were able to allow us the use of their orchard, a superb venue for the event.

The Circle is hopeful of returning to this attractive venue again next year.

Probably the Circle's best

In what the judges hailed as probably one of the best wine festivals for quality that the Circle has held, reigning festival champion, Joyce Pryor, was narrowly defeated this year by her arch rival, Vince Wolny. Despite gaining six firsts against Vince’s five, he managed to amass enough points (126) to topple her by eight. He also gained the award for best wine in show, again narrowly defeating Joyce in the final assessment.
The festival is held in conjunction with the village flower show and Joyce once again turned her festival successes to her advantage by winning the silver rose bowl for most points in the entire flower show for the second time in three years.

Trophies for best wine and for most points in the open show and for an East Coker Circle member were won by Vince Wolny and the novice rose bowl was won by Chris Branson.

Champions in close finish

Following last year's tie for Winemaker of the Year between Joyce Pryor and Vince Wolny, both were in contention again this year. Vince had taken a creditable lead during the monthly competitions and despite a valiant effort at the annual meeting when she won three of the five classes and was placed in the other two, Vince just managed to hold on to his lead.

Class results: White dry - 1, Joyce Pryor; 2, Vince Wolny. Red dry - 1, Joyce Pryor; 2, Vince Wolny. Social white - 1, Vince Wolny; 2, Joyce Pryor. Red dessert - 1, Joyce Pryor; 2, Vince Wolny; 3, Ian Westaway.

Chairman’s choice (Rosé, medium dry) - 1, Vince Wolny; 2, Joyce Pryor. Judge's Favourite - Joyce Pryor (red desser). Novice - Don Nicol.

Judge was Terry Western (Mendip Wine Circle).
