David Mitchell's Origami Heaven - Modular Origami - 24

24

A selection of designs made by combining twentyfour identical modules.

The Simplex Cube is a robust and versatile design by David Mitchell. Like Sonobe modules, Simplex modules can be used to construct any form whose faces are either squares, or silver triangles, or a combination of the two.

David Mitchell's Two Fold Cube is made from a two fold module first used by Tony O'Hare. The cube design is achieved by combining three square-section tubes in a Borromean relationship.

David Mitchell's Kite Pattern Rhombic Dodecahedron is assembled from twenty-four corner-pocket modules of a design related to that of the module for Nick Robinson's Rhombic Dodecahedron. David Mitchell's Kite Pattern Triacontahedron was derived from this design.

The form of David Mitchell's Gemini 24 is based on the rhombicuboctahedron in much the same way as Gemini 30 is based on the icosidodecahedron. The module was developed from the Gemini 30 module by widening the angle of the folds used to create the pockets and tabs.

David Mitchell's Elite is made from twenty-four extremely simple modules folded from silver rectangles. The overall shape of the form is that of a cuboctahedron. The square faces are faceted to align with the planes of the dimpled triangular faces creating a remarkable sculptural effect and revealing some unexpected mathematical properties of the cuboctahedral form.
