Thoki Yenn's Umulius
Rectangulum is a classic design created by a
box-pleating technique. Each of the three
Borromean elements are folded from a single sheet
of paper. |

David Mitchell's Borromean
Links
is a version of Thoki Yenn's Umulius Rectangulum
made from twelve modules of two different kinds.
Using a larger number of modules makes it
possible to produce a much more finely crafted
result. The design is unusual in that the geometry
of both sets of modules is based on division into
fifths. Ref:

David Mitchell's Tubular
Rhombic Dodecahedron is an unusual form made
from twenty-four equilaterally triangular section
tubes linked together with joining-pieces. The
number of joining-pieces required is variable
(either 12, 24 or 48) depending on the length of
the strips used. Heinz Strobl has independently
originated an essentially similar form. Ref: M1125 / Diagrams not
yet available.

David Mitchell's 6-Tetrahedra sculpture is based on a
mathematical form known as the third stellation
of the rhombic dodecahedron, though it is also
possible to view it as a compound of six rhombic
tetrahedra. The structure is made by combining
thirty-six modules of two different kinds, twelve
of which are tubes. Although you cannot see it
from the photograph this allows light to travel
right through the structure in many directions. Ref: M1034 / Diagrams not
yet available.
