The Awards were presented during the Spring National Viewing Sessions of The British Federation of Film Societies in March 1998 when hundreds of delegates from film societies all over the United Kingdom came together to preview newly available movies and assess them for use at their own societies. They are the major event in the British film society calendar, holding screenings in at least two cinemas of pre-release movies plus talks, special events and the Film Society of the Year Award Ceremony.
| Alan Parker then the new BFI Chairman presented the prizes to the best societies in five categories. He spoke of the valuable role film societies played in film exhibition and said he would do all he could to help them. The new attitude of the BFI was underlined by the presence of the new BFI Director John Woodward at the Awards. |
