This is by far the busiest group in the Federation with
over 70 film societies.
It was one of the pioneers of block-booking films - where the group rented a film for a few weeks and during that time passed it by hand from one venue to the next. The charge for each screening was reduced because by avoiding postal delays the renters could get more hire-fees in the period than usual.
The group tends to run one-day events, mainly in the form of viewing-sessions where society committees can see films that are newly becoming available. It has also run training days and schools. It works with the local authorities and lottery funding to help establish new societies especially in Devon and Cornwall.
The powerhouse team behind its success is Brian Clay and Paul Schilling, whose enthusiasm and energy inspire others.
This website doubled as the South-West Group's own until 2007 when (at my request) they went independent. Do visit their excellent website to find out about film societies and events in South-West England.
Sunday 30th October 2011 at Mathews Hall, Fore Street, Topsham, Devon EX3 0HF - details here.
The Group holds a viewing day in Spring and Autumn each year. Different venues are used. Each time at least two "cinemas" are in action so that if societies send more than one delegate they can report on up to six features and shorts afterwards. The idea is to let delegates see if the films would suit their own members.
